When did you guys start introducing alcohol (nothing hard just like wine/beer, etc) back into your schedule (for fun, relaxing, etc)?? I have been wanting some wine (I'm a wine head sadly) for a while now. I'm not a big drinker, I just enjoy wine a good bit. Thanks!

I had my surgery on 3/14/07, and had a glass of wine around the first of June 2007.  Tasted great, went down fine, and i wish i had never picked it up. Never had a problem with alcohol before that - but, it's definitely a "transfer-addiction" issue for me now. Before anyone decides to turn this into a moral discussion on alcohol comsuption - PLEASE read my post and notice all the "I" statments!!!  This was my experience - whi*****luded 2 hospitalizations for alcohol detox after my surgery (one where my BAC was 350 - close to death). I was going to just skip this post, but I think it's important to talk about the "tough" subjects.  And, trust me - alcohol is a tough one. Best of luck to you - and, PLEASE don't interpret my post as a way of me telling you (or anyone else) to NOT drink alcohol post-surgery.  I'm merely sharing my experience.  That's what we're here for, right? :-)

Wow I'm very sorry that happened to you but I guess you are too, so I'll save the ninnying. So you'd say you started drinking again about 3 months post-op then? I hope it doesn't become a problem for me of course, but then again it never was before and I quit smoking on my own w/out medical assistance about 2 years ago. That was an experience lemme tell ya. I do know something about addiction and I've recently taken a liking to lottery tickets (a couple dollars once in a blue moon literally) and I was just wanting a drink along the same lines and mostly to calm my nerves without pills. Thanks for posting that though I have been waiting for someone to say something I would never judge anyone for drinking, even to excess. That's your life and I just wanted some feedback, thanks again! (I would never JUST drink to calm my nerves you guys, don't go holy roly on me!!!)

LOL - i'd never go holy roly on you ;)  i can barely roll anywhere these days LOL..... I never had a problem with alcohol before - and, the only thing i knew about addiction was the 20 years prior that I've spent running addiction programs as a licensed therapist!!!!!   LMAO - just laughing at the irony, cuz i'm alive to laugh at it, my friend. Once my binge eating was taken away, i was left vulnerable to other addictions (cross/transfer addiction), and low and behold - the wine was there to greet me. Again - this was my journey - and, thank GOD i'm still here to journey on.

Lance, No ‘holy-roly’ from me either. Being an expert at Over-indulgence, myself. I do have some incite… A huge correlation between WLS and Post-op Alcoholism. A few dozen or so of our guys here have openly discussed it. Some have overcome their problem, Others have not. Check with your doc. I know that sounds odd, but-

So many of us just keep a Doctor like we keep A Fire extinguisher under the kitchen cabinet. Rarely used until real sh*t breaks out. They should be as useful as a can opener! -I went through about a month of "having a little something" In the evenings in order to get to sleep. It suddenly dawned on me one day- "I’ve had ‘a little something’ every day for the past 3 ½ weeks." Every Day……..Hmmmmmm… That coupled with the Talks at my support group From folks who had fallen into full out alcoholism, Combined with the info from my Doc, about how common it was, And my family history of Alcoholism back through 3 generations, Made me come to a screeching halt. If I was truly using the Glass of wine or a Beer with my last meal To help me get to sleep, Then why the hell not get something that actually Was prescribed for just that!?! Something without all of the other less than beneficial side effects and problems. My doc prescribed something, And it worked WONDERS. "IF" I found that I was not falling to sleep Normally, Then, I have one. The great thing about it is that it Works Fast, Zero Calories, And it’s also Non-Addictive. I haven’t had one in nearly 3 years, But still have some in the cabinet if I need help "relaxing." Do I still have some wine or a Beer? Yep! But about once every 3 weeks or so, Even a Great single Malt Scotch about once a month- Not as just a part of my constant calorie intake. Full-Blown, Life-depriving Alcoholism creeps in quickly. Just be extra careful and don’t assume – "That’s something that could happen to Others, Not Me." Best Wishes- Dx

Thanks man - I think it's a topic that doesn't get addressed enough in the professional community.  I'm currently on a bit of a "crusade" locally to educate the professional community about the risk of cross addiction with all addiction treatment.   And, being six foot ten - they are going to listen to me!!!!!!!!!! LOL

Hey Chuck.  No moral discussions here.  We either try to help or bust your balls.  I worked with a guy who was since fired.  He had the surgery perhaps 5 years ago.  I am not sure of his pre-op drinking status but post op he had a huge addiction transfer to alcohol and possibly drugs.  He was the department golden boy and now he has been fired mostly due to factors relating to the alcohol.  It's sad but I guess it happens.  Thanks for putting it out there because knowlege is power.

Thanks Scott.   I lived in Brooklyn, NY for many years - i know what it's like to bust a ball or three :)    Trust me, i feel the love, for sure.   I was just trying to make it CRYSTAL clear to everyone that i was talking about MY experience, and not trying to therapize anyone!!!!!!!   Sometimes the "dual-role" in my life gets confusing (to myself and those around me LOL)......    I don't feel judged here at all - and, for those of who might recall a certain post about a year ago that offended me when someone posted a "gay joke" - i had NO PROBLEM at all voicing my opinion :) You guys rcok - and, my balls love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah thanks for being honest and I was just thinking shouldn't he know better he's a therapist but I'm not judgin' trust me that's why I like this site so much b/c we can ask whatever comes to mind and usually there's someone who has experienced it or knows something about it. And I got the irony haha I thought that was funny too.
