Bread??

I'm doing good...really.  I've avoided the food deamons that have haunted me for the past couple of weeks.  I'm excersing, resistance training, etc.  and I'm down 48 pounds in just over two months post-surgery.  However, I'm dying to eat a sandwich with bread!  Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that I can eat the meat, etc INSIDE the sandwich, I just really want to enjoy the bread again (not that I'd eat the whole thing, but you know...).  Is there anyone who can stomach bread post surgery and if so how long did it take you to comfortably eat it?   Thanks Jason 320-295-247-200 highest-surgery-current-goal

Jason, eventually you will be able to eat bread.....although you should make it some bread other than white bread.  But I would be a little hesitant to eat it this soon out.  I tried wheat bread at about 6 months out and it was still a little hard for me to get down.  Bread was one of the things that help make me morbidly obesese along with pop and chips.  I have done my best to learn to eat better foods and leave those alone as much as possible.  I am sure some to the other guys on here can give you a better answer.  But I hope this helps you out some.

The things that seem to be the hardest on me are the things that are soft like bread, potatoes, etc. I think the issue is that they are soft and go down easy.  Often before they are chewed fully. I really try to concentrate when eating something of that consistency, I try to make sure that I still give it 30 chews or more before I swallow it. Your mileage may vary Scott

The first time you do something - It's going to be a personal record!

I'm 5 months out.  I tried bread at three months and have no problem.  I usually eat it toasted - NUTs advice. I only eat whole grain bread and I only eat 1/2 slice once or twice a day. That said it is a struggle.  It's the carbs and sugar in the bread that makes me want it.  I don't crave sweets or pop or most any "bad" food, but I do crave bread.  Some days I leave it because I'm afraid it will start that slippery slope. I started eating toasted sourdough bread at about 3 weeks out. I also eat whole wheat bread but it has to be toasted, helps out with it keeping its shape once it is in the pouch.

Keep in mind that once you start eating more carbs your weightloss will slow down as you're no longer going to be in a state of ketosis. If you can hold out for another month or so I would do it. Once you introduce a new food it is hard to go back to the basics.

Although I've had no problems with bread, I do wish I wouldn't have started so soon. I probably would have been down another 10 pounds or so today.

Almost two years out - I can eat bread with no problems, with the single exception that it puts something in my pouch that's not protien.  My personal favorite bread is Orowheat's Whole Grain Flax Seed.  I'll generally use one slice, cut it in half, and make a sandwich out of that.   You just have to keep in mind that, as much as you want to enjoy your food, it is simply fuel now.  And, as much as I enjoy the bread, I have to keep it limited. Good luck, Jason - yoiu're doing great!

Same as Brian on the bread being toasted.  I tried bread soft and i had to throw it up because it got too dense when it was chewed.  However, when I eat whole wheat toasted, it goes down fine.  I think the moisture in the bread make it turn into big dense bread ball in the pouch... vs toasted which breaks up easily, especially when its chewed.   One of my fav quick breakfasts is an fried egg over-easy on half of a whole-wheat toasted english muffin and a sprinkle of bacon bits.  Lots of protein and about 10g carbs.

We have a tradition of being bread bakers in our family, so it's a part of my every-day life. Granted, I stick to the heartier stuff now, but the occasional baguette surfaces now and then. I didn't re-introduce bread until about 8 months, if I remember correctly.

Now...flatbreads such as tortilla and naan make me foam still.

Try making wraps out of the flat bread. Fill it with meat, lettuce, tomatoes, etc. Delicious!  There's going to come a day when we all give in to bread and carbs, but there are some better choices than others.

I'm a year out and eat one tortilla in the morning with an egg bean and cheese taco. I do eat bread ocassionally rasin toast in the morning or something like that. When I eat a hambuger i'll eat about half the bun all together. To my knowledge I've never had a problem with any form of bread. Good Luck Randy
