I would think that everyone who comes out of the hospital weighing more than they did when they went in. Like Jim said, they give you so much IV fluid during the surgery (I think I got like 12 liters of fluid through the IV during my 2 days in the hospital). Also when you have any trauma (i.e. surgery), that part of the body tends to put fluid between the cells (edema), so after WLS the stomach, bowel and abdominal wall can hold quite a bit of fluid, it can take 1 or 2 weeks for this fluid to move back into the blood stream and then the kidneys will be able to get rid of it.
Just remember to walk, sip and rest. Make sure that you get some form of exercise, it will prevent blood clots from forming in your legs (at least a mile a day, but the more the better, but this does not need to be all at once, believe it or not you will be walking over a mile a day before you know it, and it will feel good).
I am glad to hear you are over the gas pain now, if you are like me you will be feeling better than ever very shortly.
I hope you have a great journey!
Jim
