Has anyone experienced different taste changes after surgery? I'm eating a chicken patty thing the kind you can get from Tyson in the bag frozen or whatever. It tastes like cardboard!!!@#$#$#@# I'm not really understanding why my taste has changed for this as I used to LOVE them. What other taste variances have you guys experienced post-op?

I've read the stories of lots of people who make the same claim, but it hasn't happened to me. Everything still tastes pretty much the same as it always did. I still like the same things I always liked and still dislike the things I've always disliked. I need to work on getting to where I like eating vegatables I think. The further out I get the more I'm gonna need to fill up on low nutritional value bulk in order to continue losing and then maintain.

Lance, Early on I had weird taste sensations. Everything tasted like metal. Later, I also noticed changes in my taste preferences. Anything that tastes very sweet at all (even SF ‘Fake Sweets’) Taste like crap! Poultry has some odd tastes for me. I used to prefer dark meat when eating fried chicken. Now?  Breast Only! Dark meat turkey has a “rotting taste” for me. Same with some pork. If it is not perfectly seasoned and cooked “just right” I taste a hint of rancidness that makes me want to gag. Early on I could write it off to lingering effects of anesthesia. (and I had an azz-load of anesthesia for quite a while) And with the sweets, I think that is a sub-conscious reaction To the toxic effect that Sugar has on me now. But the others? I have no idea. Perhaps overall blood chemistry changes, Or hormone levels…. No idea. I haven’t “looked into it” But surely there must be a simple explanation. Good one to ask your Bariatric Doc at next meeting. Best Wishes- Dx

He doesn't like talking, unfortunately, the doc that is. I don't really know if it's the breading on the chicken or what but when I eat plain chicken breast or whatever it tastes fine (no rotting taste for me omg!). I guess I will just not eat that anymore or something haha. It still smells the same though, the taste is like eating something very very generic. I think that sounds weird, but it's true. Like eating a piece of plastic or something it's strange. Thanks, though. I haven't tried anything sweet yet except one single Junior Mint candy (love those) and since it was just one it didn't do anything to me.

…and, could have just been a ‘freezer burned’ bag of Tyson. Keep trying different things that are healthy. You’ll get a huge range of options to choose from. Best Wishes- Dx

Hey Lance,

I find that i put sauces on everything - and i like things a lot spicier than before. Bertolli makes an alfredo sauce (sun dried tomato, basil, garlic, and other flavors) - and, i use the tysons diced chicken with no breading, and put that in the sauce. I also use the diced chicken (nuke it to thaw) and put over greens with cherry tomatoes, shredded cheese, red grapes, slivered almonds, and lite dressings for a yummy salad....

Also - have you found the sugar free mints? They have altoids, andes mints (YUMMY), and york peppermint patties - all sugar free. Those are the ones i've found so far!!!!!!!!!!! Just be careful with the Sugar Free chocolates - it gives ya the runs a bit (which helps the constipation) - but, they are also NOT a non-fat treat, so watch the fat grams... But - look for them. SPRAWL-MART has a lot of Sugar Free goodies in the candy aisle.

I just do a lot of trial and error with the taste thing - Good Luck finding the stuff that works for you....

AH! DUH!!! You are still in the rapid weightloss stage… Your metabolism is in Ketosis. When your body metabolizes fat, it gets sugar and ketones. Sugar is used to fuel your body and the ketones come out in your urine. That's right, you will pee out your weight. Ketones are yellow and they smell TERRIBLE. Your urine will be a more intense color and it will have a stronger odor. BE HAPPY; your body is losing weight by burning FAT. Your breath will smell, as ketones come out the saliva and in your sweat, too. The ketones in your saliva can and do cause horrible taste fluctuations as well as general Bad Breath. You will just have to carry (sugar free) breath mints and use extra deodorant. And then enjoy the weight loss. Took me a trip around the cup to get to the handle But I think this could be your problem. Best Wishes- Dx

Oh yeah that could be it too....although I hit a plateau like every other 3 days or something. I know before the surgery I didn't have bad breath ever maybe in the mornings or whatever but now I have bad breath like crazy!

Lance, To me a lot of things taste saltier than what they did.  Also noticed too that where I used to use 4 packs of Equal in my morning coffee, or glass of decaf iced tea, now only use 2.  For whatever reason I only drink half of either instead of the whole thing. Go to the other end of the chicken scale and go to eggs.  I've had good luck with them scramled, poached or sunny side up.  Stay away from the processed egg patties in the freezer case!  Taste worse than cow **** and are tough on the pouch or have been for me. Tickfaw huh?  Back in the 70's my family was living in N.O. and had a weekender outside Magnolia, MS.  Passed through there every weekend.

Never, and I mean NEVER, trust a fart!!

Yeah we've been here for a couple years now. I find that stuff is wayyyyy saltier too!!! And way sweeter, I can't stand sweet crap as it is so now if I ever did drink coffee I'd probably use like ONE packet of sweetner or something. And with eggs....that's a toughy for me, actually. I can eat all egg styles except when I've gotten an omelet cooked at IHOP it was really dry I guess and it didn't feel too good going down. When I make my own omelets I just leave them a little moist and they give me no trouble whatsoever. I don't really do scrambled at all because I like to add cheese and ham to my eggs, but the scrambled do okay too just as long as I cook it myself. Thanks for the info!
