Beating constipation?

I've posted before about the agony of post-WLS constipation. Well, here's the solution that's worked for me: Add a teaspoon or two of olive oil per day -- drizzle it on a meal, or take it straight. Also, Benefiber, sugarless chewables. And keep up the water intake, of course.

Thanks for the tip. I'd be willing to try a teaspoon of motor oil if someone told me it would work.

I've found an alternative way to help with this too. One of the drugs I tried early on in the effort to fight my obesity was Xenical which blocks absorption of about 30% of the fat in the food you eat when you take it.  Xenical is now on the market in an over the counter version called Alli. Xenical didn't really help all that much in my pre-WLS dieting but I discovered that using the over the counter version at lunch even when eating a fairly light in fat content lunch, helps keep things moving through.  And it won't add any fat calories, it'll remove a few in the process.

Easy solution that was recommended by my WLS doc at Duke. Take one or two Colace w/o stimulate pills each day along with your other pills. They help your bowels retain more water so you don't get backed up. I was so constipated after WLS I had to have hemorrhoid surgery three months later. The daily calcium pills will really lock you up tight. I have been using Colace them for over two years now and they work great. You can get them the generic version (Equate brand) at Wal-Mart for about $5 for a 30-45 day supply. Hope this helps you out….

I take 2 colace in the morning and 2 at night.  I've done this since 6 months post op, and have 2 BM's daily.  I also make sure i get all my water in.  Both my internist and my bariatric surgeon recommended the colace, and said the 4 pills per day are very safe, even long term.  I tell ya, it sure saved me!!!!!!!!!!! I also increased my fiber - popcorn at night (100 calorie packs are great) is an excellent form of fiber.   Good luck - but, don't be afraid of the colace... Check with your doctor first though.....    Chuck

I tried everything....Colace the whole works. The cheapest and most reliable is a 3oz bathroom dixie cup a 1/3 full of "Flax seed meal" taken every morning (not that tree hugging "organically ground stuff")...It will work everytime.
