Catheter
When they told me this question comes up every month or so I didn't believe it but I have to admit, they were right!
Lol...okay well let me tell you for me this is how it went. They put the thing in while you're out so that part was fine. Waking up in recovery was another story. You have this strong urge to want to pee, from the pressure of the thing in your bladder hitting against the nerve endings, but you just feel like you can't. They told me don't try to "hold it" in cause that could be dangerous and on the the other hand, don't try and force anything out as well.
After the first few hours you start to get used to the feeling of it but when you move you are reminded that you have a tube the size of a jumbo straw jammed into your sacred part. By day two I was just wishing they would take the damn thing out but then you start getting really used to it and don't even notice it as much. I actually started liking it since I didn't have to do anything when I had to pee, just sit there and relax and fill up the little bag at the bottom of the bed.
Then came time to take it out (for me it was day 3). The nurse deflates the little balloon inside your bladder and then tells you to take a really deep breath...then she yanks the hell out of it and before you can even think about how much pain you're going to be in you realize it is out already and the nurse is already washing her hands and cleaning up.
All in all, it wasn't even half as bad as I had anticipated.

All I know is my catheter bothered me to a point where I couldn't lay down comfortably in my bed very long so I stood up for a large portion of my first night post-WLS. The good news was it forced me to walk a whole lot more than I probably have done otherwise. The nurse "yanked" it out the next day so ask them to be gentle cause it's the only one you got. All things considered though, it wasn't that bad.

Oh no you did not my brother,,,,

Excuse me..... when you had to walk did you throw the bag over your shoulder....like a nap sack??
Hence the name "BONER"
we should all be so lucky!!!
I be thinkin' I had a piisss bag either hangin' from the wheelie thing you walk around with or it was pinned to my gown along with all the other drain bags but can't remember for sure. I do remember having to lean over my bed pretty much the entire night one in order to get comfortable. The nurses yanked it out AM day two.....but maybe my memory fades. Boner
They took it out the same day of the surgery, but they threatened to put it back in if I hadn't urinated by midnight. Let me tell you, the motivation to pee had never been stronger. Taking it out was no big deal.
Recently had a urinary problem that they are still investigating. They put a catheter in while I was awake. Nurse tried it 3 times. Let me tell you something.... You don't want to experience that.
