I know it's crazy but I'm craving beer man, I've never been much of a drinker in the last 30 years but I did occasionally have a couple of beers and shots.  I have a 50 year old bottle of Old Taylor bourbon that a friend gave me (right now I have to be satisfied smelling the cork), as well as a few bottles of wine, amaretto, irish whiskey, brandy, and a bottle of kahlua (for coffee you know), and a few beers left over from last summer.  Will I ever be able to partake of these again?  Huh? Thanks, BobM.

I would say yes, At least in my case it certainly hasn't been a problem which can be somewhat of a problem. One or two beers is all I care for anymore, which is strange because I was a real beer hound back in the day. My poison of choice nowdays is Brandy, diet coke, and water. A press. I can drink that stuff until my intelligence level becomes so incredibly high that no one can understand what I'm saying.

As with most things it depends.  The problem with any alcohol is empty calories -- you are consuming calories that provide no nutrition.  Alcohol is very easily converted to sugar by your body so in some respects it is no different than eating a tablespoon of sugar.  The results are the same.  Once you have soem latitude with your meal plan, you can account for small amounts of alcohol.  I am 15 months out and at most once a month have wine with a meal.  I tried beer once and lived to regret it.  Talk about major dumping.  I was wishing I would die and get it over with.  On the other hand I had one Yukon Jack at a comedy club with no repercussions other than needing to drastically adjust my meals for the next day to account for the calories. Most folks find they can still enjoy an occasional drink with no problem. I still have a nip from time to time Or a glass of wine with a meal. Because the impact of Alcohol is felt quicker, There is the very real risk of having it become “problem drinking,” Or some other euphemism for Alcoholism, Pretty quickly. If you are drinking for the flavor, rather than the buzz, Chances are you’ll be fine. But later, later, later… Just get that hole patched and get back to Passing food through your edited chitlins for now! Best Wishes- Dx

What everyone else said plus the worry of carbination. That being said, I have a couple friends that brew, and they made some with a lot less carbonation in it.  I was able to sample some of that without any problems Scott

I would think it's fine.  Just be aware that addiction transfer is out there so if it becomes an every day craving --- again just be aware. I drink an occational beer.

I waited almost a full year before I tried any alcohol but I have had a couple of ales from our local sports bar. It was foamy and delicious. Carbonation didn't bother me when I drank the ale from a glass (from the tap) but I didn't care for it when drinking it bottled.

Since surgery, I definitely prefer the wheat ales as opposed to the beers. However, I can only drink 2 glasses and I am very tipsy.. my wife calls me a cheap date now!! LOL- Alcohol affects me a lot more than it did before, not that I was ever a heavy drinker.. but a couple times a year I'll have a few.. now it's a couple of times a year I'll have one or 2 -- and that's it!

** Be ware of the transfer addiction mentioned from a previous post!

I am only about 6 months out. Probably too early, but I have had a glass of wine a couple times with no problem. So, last Saturday the kids were at prom. I figured me and momma are home alone, no kids, we rented a couple movies and I bought a bottle of wine. Wife isn't much of a wine drinker, so she didn't want any. I proceeded to drink the whole bottle myself. BIG mistake. So, I now know what dumping feels like. IT SUCKS! I spent all day Sunday in bed with stomach cramps from HELL! Threw up a few times that afternoon. By Monday morning I still felt like crap but could function. So, for future reference, occasional glass of wine = OK  Whole bottle of wine = BAD! VERY BAD!

Personally - three months shy of my two year anniversary - I still avoid carbonation like the plague.  I don't want to strech the pouch out with it.  However, I do know that a lot of the guys in here don't have a problem with beer - so it's all what you can tolerate. Be careful - you'll be a lightweight.  Last February we went to Las Vegas, and I had an encounter with Long Island Iced Tea that has kept me pretty much off of alcohol since then.   Bob - on a side note - I'm so happy to see you're back in here.  Update your profile with everything that's happened.  I haven't been able to keep up in here as much as I used to.

I would say be suspicious of this craving and limit yourself because of it. The craving may be a search for something to replace food addiction.

Best Wishes,

Dave
