Hi my name is Rob...I am from RI. I am in the very early stages of getting WLS. I have been to the orientaion and had the follow up appt with the surgeon. I have to lose a decent amount before the surgery and looking into Optifast(all liquid) to help shed it quicker, I did liquid in the past so I know I can tolereate only liquids for a bit. I was originally going to get Lap-Band but after reading and searching through profiles, I think RNY is a better choice for me. What made you choose RNY over Lap-Band? Did you ever consider Lap-Band? What is the biggest struggle post-opt for you? I am just hoping that some of my fellow brothers out there who have have it done can pass along some wisdom to this new guy who is looking to get on the path to better place, a healthier place!! thanks!!

Hey Rob, glad you found the Men's Forum.  Early on I wanted to do the Lap-Band.  But at my first surgeon consult, he informed me why I needed the RNY.  No matter what surgery you decide on, the most important thing is for you to become a more healthier person.  My best advice for you at this point would be for you to read through the posts on this forum.  The guys on here are great and they are a wealth of knowledge.  Especially check out the posts from Dx.  He provides all of us with a large amount of information.  Feel free to ask a lot of questions.  You will get good, honest and straightforward answers.  Good luck on the liquid diet and your efforts to loose weight.

Hi Rob, Lap-band was my first choice until I researched it a lot, I also went to a lap-band seminar and the doc talk about it and RNY he does both types and he did not speak that highly of it. I ruled out lap-band cause I did not want to be married to the doc. going in for fills or to have a fill taken out, worrie about if it was going to slip, and dumping was not my bag of tea. So RNY was the way I thought I would go until I found out about the Sleeve. So I also ruled out RNY cause of the dumping, the extra vitamins you need to take, the rerouting of the intestine.
I am not a sweet eater or junk food eater I just use to like eat a lot of food. lol
I did have the sleeve done and I love every bit of it. Go check it out on the sleeve forum here. I had it done on 2-1-08 weighed 377 and as of today I have lost almost 70lbs. I can eat all the food I ate before just in a lot smaller portions. I do not have to worry if the food I am eating has sugar in it. I have no dumping issues I can't say one bad thing about it.
If you have any questions feel free to send me a email I will try and answer them.
One happy sleevester, Steve

Rob, Welcome to the Men's Board! Here’s where this site is very useful. There are a number of different types Of Weight loss Surgery Available. Each has its specific Strengths and perceived Weaknesses. Research them all.  Ask people who have had the various procedures Specific questions. Before moving on know exactly what it is you’re getting into. Here is an excellent introduction to all of the info- http://www.obesityhelp.com/morbidobesity/information/wlsjour ney/surgery+types.php You’ve asked about the two most common types- Adjustable Gastric Banding, Commonly referred to as “Lap-Band” It is a purely “Restrictive” procedure. Reducing the volume of food intake. To find out more about the “Lap-Band,”- http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/lapband/ Roux-en-y  ( RNY) Gastric Bypass This operation is the most common gastric bypass procedure. It combines Restrictive and Malabsorptive Components. To find out more about the RNY- http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/RNY/ But, There are others as well- Duodenal Switch – DS An improvement of the BPD (it is also referred to as 'BPD/DS'). A significant malabsorptive component. To find out more about the DS- http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/DS/ Vertical Banded Gastroplasty – VBG A purely restrictive procedure with no malabsorptive effect. To find out more about the VBG- http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/VBG/ VERTICAL SLEEVE GATRECTOMY – VSG A purely restrictive procedure with no malabsorptive effect. To find out more about the VSG- http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/vsg/ A Great “Reserve” of WLS info online is at- Quix-Wiki Now, As you visit these various links and message Boards, Know that like “Choosing a Religion,” Most people who have had a Life Saving/Changing Procedure Will recommend the one that worked for them.  Yes? A Baptist, When asked which church they would recommend, Will rarely if ever refer you to The Episcopals down the Street. Nor will the Mormons point you toward The nearest Mosque.  “Is one of these Procedures Better Than the rest?” Some will say Yes. And some will say it about each procedure. But it is more like- “Rock, Paper, Scissors.” Do you know that game? Scissors Cut Paper, Paper Wraps Rock, & Rock Breaks Scissors. That is the best analogy I can think of Concerning the Various Procedures. And even at this, There are NO Absolutes. Outside of the game, I have seen Paper torn or ripped by Rocks, And I have purchased Scissors wrapped in Paper. I’m sure if given the time, Rock could be chipped away and carved With a pair of scissors. Some procedures are less invasive with lower complication rates, Some allow for a life of less restrictive eating, Some are more available and affordable. Keep Researching, Asking, and collecting information. The Main Message Board is a general “Clearing House” for Questions and support. And not only at this site by all means.  For some “serious” information check out publications from- American Society for Bariatric Surgery http://www.asbs.org/html/pdf/asbs_abstract_booklet.pdf

Get all of the information you can before “Choosing” to have WLS or “Which One.” (Me? I have an RNY.  I first looked into Lap-Band, then almost went for a DS, but ended up choosing an RNY. Chose it for the combination of Malabsorption and Restriction aspects combined. Coming up on 5 years post-op, Been at a Normal BMI for right at 4 years now.  No Re-gain, no Mal-Nutrition issues, I take NSAIDS on docs recommendation, Eat Steak, and everything BUT Sugar.  Dumping occurs if I eat sweets, which has made them lose their appeal.  Thank Heavens, I don’t think I could have made it to a Normal BMI if I had to rely on “Will-power” to keep me from eating sweets.  Might have, but not likely.) Best Wishes- Dx

I thought about LapBand for 3 years prior to surgery, and almost pulled the trigger on it twice. I got scared off by the cost each time. The turning point for me was when a friend of mine who has always been way fatter than me got an RNY done and went from being 50 lbs heavier than me to 100 lbs lighter than me in about 4.5 months. And the deal sealer was when I found out he had his RNY done laparoscopically. My surgeon further confirmed that RNY was right for me by telling me that LapBands are good for people who need to lose 100, but for those of us who need to lose 200+, they're just not enough tool. I have no idea what you want or need to lose, but that certainly needs to be part of your consideration. Good luck with it and stay plugged in here around the board. There are guys with all kinds of surgeries and in all different parts of the WLS journey. You can get help in damned near any area you need it on here. JF
The free man owns himself. He can damage himself with either eating or drinking....... If he does he is certainly a damn fool, and he might possibly be a damned soul; but if he may not, he is not a free man any more than a dog.
