My brother will be riding his bicycle from San Francisco to Portsmouth NH.  The journey starts on 05-22 and ends 07-22.   He's posting online at http://pedalingprof.blogspot.com  .   I mention this now since he has started making entries.  Of particular interest so far are the descriptions of his equipment and his training schedule.  I think that those of your who are interested in bicycling may want to read some of his entries.

I envy him and know the challenges. I know someone who is training for and qualified for Race Across America. I wish your brother a safe ride and good luck.

Is he doing it for any worthy causes or to raise money for them?

Really enjoyed reading your brothers story. I'll also be following his journey. I would be interested on the type of equipment he's using. Thxs Bob

I just want to clarify that Tom is paying all of his own expenses on his cross country ride.  He has done many rides for various charities.  Since the ride accross America is not for any cause, he decided to raise money for Elijah's Promise which is a local charity in New Brunswick NJ.  Tom has been associated with them for several years.  And, as a Rutgers grad and professor, he thought it would make sense to bring the Rutgers community on board with funding for the charity.  However, he's letting the charity handle the actual donations and appeals. I had suggested that he get people to pledge a penny a mile since that would end up being $38 for anybody who sponsors the whole ride.  My idea was rejected since they want to earn $38,000.  However, they'll gladly accept any donations they get.  I'm not asking any of you to donate.  Rather, I thought that those of you who are interested in cycling might want to see what he's going through.

Great stuff, SJ! Thanks for sharing this and I will follow your brothers trip with great interest since crossing the US on my bike is an ultimate goal of mine. Getting 2 or 3 months off of work is the greatest barrier for me now. I recently joined an "ultra-distance" cycling club here in Colorado which specializes in long, longer, longest rides.  Give your brother my best wishes. Boner
