what do you say to others?

Guys...what do you tell other people when they say..."damn" you look good, I just saw you a few months ago...how much have you lost?...how did you do it? Some people...closer friends, I just tell them how I did it...other people who I don't see that often, I really don't want to go into the whole details of my life story and I find myself saying something like "diet & exercise".  But when they push and say "how much have you lost?"..50lbs?...I hate saying something like almost 100lbs (although I'm proud of that) it seems like it leads to the series of questions of "how" and I don't know that they really care. So, if you've learned some "pat" answers, I'd appreciate knowing how other people handle this sudden "attention" David

I usually tell them from the beginning. My program through Kaiser took 9 months, so I tell them It wasn't that quick. I explain my reason for the surgery.   Basically it goes something like this. I went on a strict diet and exercise program for 9 months, during that time I lost almost 110 pounds, I then had bariatric surgery to further help me achieve my goals.  Since the surgery I have lost another 60 or whatever I happen to be at pounds.  My goal is another 70. When they ask why I had the surgery after losing all that weight, I tell them because I have never been able to maintain weight loss in my life, and I felt I needed that added tool to assist me in achieving the healthy lifestyle I want to live. All of my friends and close acquaintences know. I just answer their questions and acknowledge their compliments gracefully. Usually. One lady the other day told me I was a shadow of my former self. I asked her somewhat pointedly if she'd ever seen a 325 lb shadow before. More distant acquaintences get this canned answer to the question of "how are you doing it?". I tell them, "About 1200 calories per day, about 3-5 miles of walking per day.........and $25,000 worth of surgery."

"I had gastric bypass".  Why?  "For health reasons".  If they want more info, I'd gladly provide it.  But if your crossing paths on the street or at the store...Those work.  Brian

I usually go with a direct- "Gastric Bypass." When trying a hint of humor, I’ll throw out- "The Al Roker Diet." That mostly gets a small nod and "oh….’ Followed closely with "OOoh!!" (I love the double takes….) If they ask more, I’ll go into it. Doesn’t bother me a bit. Some WLS folks get very self-conscious and defensive About being asked. I don’t. Best Wishes- Dx

I tell them it was the hardest thing I have done in my life! Diet and execise with a little help of GBS! I always tell them the truth no matter who it is. Be proud of what you have done and accomplished!! who cares what kind of tools you utilized to get to this point, you still got here! Keep up the awesome work and let the world know!

thanks for everyones help...I guess I feel like they are "prying" but there is no reasonable explaination for that kind of loss in that short of a time period...I do like some of your suggestions! Thanks for your help and this board! David
