Three weeks out; bitter pills

Three-week anniversary for WLS is tomorrow. Difficult to believe it has gone by so fast. And, mostly, it has gone well. Except . . . Since my post-op exam, I've been taking Urodiol, which is routinely prescribed to prevent gallstones during the first 6-8 months after surgery. It is, not to put too fine a point on it, horribly bitter. That's why docs suggest taking it, quickly, with milk. But when the prescription is above 250mg, my local pharmacy can only provide this medicine in capsule form. Of course, the capsules are too big to swallow and not get stuck in the restrictive new stomach opening. So, that means breaking open the capsule and trying to mix it with some overpoweringly substance -- like a protein shake. You still taste it -- and the experience leaves you with nausea for an hour. Thankfully, was able today to get the doc to lower my prescription from 300mg to 250mg and rewrite it so I can get tablets. Life is good. Try mixing it in a tablespoon of applesauce.  still bitter but two quick bites and it is down, no lingering no problem.

I take 300mg Urodiol capsule and have never had a problem with them getting stuck.  I was told at my surgeons office that they will look like they are too big but I didn't need to open them up because they wouldn't get stuck.

I found that opening the capsule up and putting it in a shot glass on top off either 1) liquid bullet protein or 2) liquid vitamins made the whole thing easier.  These two liquids are "heavy" enough that the Uriodol doesn't mix put stays on top or just into the first layer.  I figure the liquid vitamins are only needed until I'm done with the Uriodol but the protein shots are a good second option

The shot glass makes for a one gulp.....

Now if you add lime and a little salt then we'd really be talking! LOL

Good Luck

After my surgery EVERTHING  Tasted bitter , even water .  It did go away after a while , thankfully . I do know after surgery your tastes do change , maybe you got a little bit of that going on with you too .  That combined with the true bitterness of the pill makes it all that much  harder to swallow . I dont know , just my thoughts . Best wishes  Nick

The bitter orodiol is history. My doc rewrote the prescription for the lower, 250mg amount -- and for tablets. They are big, but cutting them in half and chasing them down with a little skim milk does the trick nicely. Thanks for all the suggestions, though.

I had the same problem with my HBP meds. I was happy ******* when the doc looked at them and told me I could take them whole. I'll be happier ******* when I get off of them altogether.
