Not only was I told to take iron, but I was also told the type to take.  I currently take 325mg of ferrous sulfate per day.

I  had strict instructions to take both Iron and calium supplements in addition to my multivitamin. When I asked my doc about the Calcium he told me off the record that those instructions for calcium were more directed towards women. He told me that because of my age (28), sex, and labs that I do not have to take a calcium suppliment.

Rob, Yes, I was told to take an iron supplement.  Initially, my iron labs were on the low end of the acceptable range.  Now they are about in the middle.

It all depends on your blood tests. I was told to take iron and the day I bought the pills I had a phone message waiting from the Dr.s office telling me to not take the iron as my levels were already high. Everyones milage will vary.

I was told that I didn't need to take extra iron.  The iron in my multivitamin was plenty.

My doc told me not to take iron until my first bloodwork post-surgery and we would decide then...unless, of course, I become symptomatic.  I take calcium citrate (almost out of my stash of Citracal chewables), prilosec, a multi. B1, B12 and just added a liquid fiber supplement (5.5 gms per day). CB

I've been told by my Dr that Men should not generally take Iron supplements unless tested and specifically told to take them because most men tend to get plenty of Iron and too much iron can be dangerous.  I just had an 18mth checkup with bloodwork and all things including iron were ok.

I was given an iron supp on my discharge papers but when I went to the pharmacy and saw the size of those horse pills I said no way! I told the CNP and she said my labs are coming back just fine on the iron without the supp so she let me go without it.

Rob, I take a really good multi with iron. (GNC Mega Gold) Calcium Citrate and Omega 3 daily. I take the calcium separte from the multi with iron. (they compete for the same receptors.) Had blood work at 14 months, my Iron was perfect. Calcium actually was high, so I cut down to one citrical a day instead of 2. Your mileage may vary. Take care. JP
