Where is my food going if not the crapper?

Hi guys!  My wife and I are stumped on this, and I knew to ask the experts on here 1st!  My surgury was 5 days ago and I'm tolerating more than what I think I should be.  An example is today I had roughly 6oz of a "protein smoothie" which consisted of whey protein powder, 1% milk, SF orange jello and some ice...roughly 30g protein.  I drank it with no problem in about 15 minutes.  I sipped it as directed just not sipping 1 to 2 oz of liquid over 30 minutes as was advised by my nutritionist.  I think I experienced fullness????  but to be honest with you I think I could have drank more or eaten something else.  I want to correct these huge mistakes now before I ruin my pouch or does it seem I am just lucky at this as far as what I am tolerating?  Any responses are greatly apprectiated!  joemama!

Well, it may be a little on the fast side that soon out, but as long as it doesn't physically hurt to do it then I think it should be fine.  I had my RNY about a month ago and I'm just now able to drink a little more than I could right out of surgery, so everyone's different.  But if you experience any pain at all just let it settle and go slower on your drinking.  I can't believe you can drink that fast actually, it still takes me at least an hour and a half to drink a bottle of water.  But good for you! Keep up the good work.

Liquids are sliders and go thorugh real fast.  I am six weeks out and I can down 20 ounces of fluid in 1-2 minutes without pain or fullness.  Now, if I put one itty bitty scrambled egg (yes just one egg) in my pouch, it brings me to my knees.  This just goes to show you how dense foods are supposed to work.  Good luck and keep up the good work.  Taz

Follow the Doc.  Be sure you don't stretch the pouch.  Having a smaller pouch forces you to eat less and doesn't allow to you to "test your limits" early on.  You have been given a gift...and have worked so hard to get to this point.  Don't play with fire...You'll get burned!!  Brian

Please go to the Diet and Nutrition Forum.  On the left side you can link to a general description of the WLS diet or, more specifically, to an RNY diet.  You seem to be having too much of the wrong liquids too soon.  I kind of remember being on clear liquids for at least a week before being able to move on to full liquids.  I really hated the puree stage but it doesn't last long (I thought pureed meats tasted nasty) but you can try other pureed foods.

It should have taken you more than 15 minutes for a 6 oz shake. Normal rate of fluid consumption is around 2 oz per 15 minutes.  Fullness is and individual experience.  Stick to portion control and guage your "fullness feeling" according to those guidelines.  Most patients are on clear fluids for the first week, and then graduate to soft or pureed foods after that.

Slow down and take it easy. Do not stress your pouch! The new seams are fragile this early on and you really need to not stress them at all. Use this time to develop good habbets so things will be easier later. I am a year and a half out and I can drink fairly quick but I do stop when I feel full, normaly after a single swallow like I used to take before surgery. I now take a mouthfull and let it slowly trickle down for about a minute or so. After 3 or 4 of those swallows spaced about 5 minutes apart, I feel full. I can drink a .5 ltr bottle of water in about 30 minutes without any discomfort. Relax and enjoy the ride!! Oh btw, my first two weeks were CLEAR LIQUIDS ONLY, a protein shake sure did NOT fall in to allowed foods. The next two weeks were pur'e foods only, then I was allowed to SLOWLY start adding new foods. A word to the wise when you do start eating solid foods, DO NOT TRY TO EAT ANYTHING NEW WHEN YOU ARE OUT IN PUBLIC!! You don't know how you are going to react to them and it is a real bummer to dump in public places.
