Protein vs Calories

I was eating a protein bar today that had 10 grams of protein and 240 calories which equaled 24 calories to 1 gram of protein, I was wondering if anyone had done any research to discover which foods gave you the best ratio value of low calories and high protein.

Dude, try the Atkins Advantage bars instead.  The one I eat a lot of the times is a peanut butter granola cruch bar and I believe it has 210 calories and it packs 17g of protein.  Just kind of an FYI.  I know taste has a lot to do with what we pick to eat and sometimes it is a balancing act.   Taz

These protein bars hafe a wide varience in this department, calories vs protein.  I'm guessing your'e eating the bar as a snack. My wife had a RNY revision in July 2007. She had a very difficult time eating, so I was searching for alternative sources of protein. One snack food she eats all day long is dried peas.  I get them from Clarks Nutrition Stores in southern CA, www.clarksnutrition.com under snack foods. Cost is $1.35 per pound. BEST THING is the 1/4 cup has 6 grams of protein, its a green veggie, and almost no calories, a good carb, etc.   She had labs done last week, and her protein levels were fine. Her primary sources of protein are a bowl of oatmeal every morning, these dried peas, and minimal other sources of protein, and she won't drink any protein supplement.

Dave, I went to Clark's to find the peas, and I couldn't find any that were $1.35 per pound.  I only found some that were $3.79 per pound. Gretchen

They are there. I think under bulk foods, then snack foods. There is no photo of them there either. But they are there. I looked up the link for someone else today and posted that.

One of the gals over at the RNY board told me that she stays away from anything over a 15:1 ratio. There are "energy bars" which are high carb with some protein thrown in that are packaged almost identically to the "protein bars". That 15:1 ratio sounds about right to me. I only eat them when I'm on the road and don't feel like stopping to eat right.
The free man owns himself. He can damage himself with either eating or drinking....... If he does he is certainly a damn fool, and he might possibly be a damned soul; but if he may not, he is not a free man any more than a dog.

The IDS New Whey Protein supplement are 4 calories per 1 gram of protein with no carbs.  That's about as good as it gets I think.  Not sure if you'd get as much hunger satisfaction from a liquid protein supplement though.
