New to all this. Surg. on the 15th
Welcome. Congratulations on getting your date confirmed. Hang out here and you can learn a lot. I have. At 270 and a 40 BMI pre-op, you're a serious lightweight on this board. It will be hard for me not to consider myself as mission accomplished when I get to 270.
The free man owns himself. He can damage himself with either eating or drinking....... If he does he is certainly a damn fool, and he might possibly be a damned soul; but if he may not, he is not a free man any more than a dog.
Man I was about to say, 270 and 40 BMI - you must have some serious co-morbidities to be having the surgery at such a low weight compared to most people. I realize things are relative for each person, but 270 isn't that bad of a weight. Surgery is a hugh thing and a lot to go through. What is your height? Anyways, good luck with your surgery. Taz
Good luck Tom. Being only 270 be prepared to hear a lot of lightweight comments (there is even a separate lightweight forum). I'm in a similar situation as you, I"m having my surgery May 10th and am 285 with a BMI of 37. I don't have any other problems (other than some serious joint pain that I a not sure being thinner will help) but I am tired of struggling with my weight and without the constant battling I'd be well into the 300lb range by now. I figured it's smarter to deal with it before it gets so bad have to deal with all of the joint damage that comes with being much heavier and the plastic surgery that you need if you get to the point where you are hundreds of pounds overweight.
Just wish would have thought of this years ago.
Good luck with your surgery.

Here, everyone understands. I saw 270 myself and think to myself, "I'll be glad when I get to that weight. It is close to my goal." We all have the same issues, no matter where we start. I am glad you found this board, as it is a constant source of wisdom and amusement.
Best of luck on your surgery and keep us posted as to how it goes, and ask questions!

ok, forget the lightweight stuff. one here too. i had all the comorbids too. ten shots of insulin a day when i wasn't on my pump. so i'm an inch shorter and was 287 at surgery. you'll find a lot of guys here under 300 when they had surgery. some just posted to you. the point is, we're not tall and our weight is really heavy for our size. standing next to my g/f we looked like the number ten! as for the back, join the club. i won't go into a lot of detail other than to say look at my past posts if you want. i had surgeries and now wear an IF device, patches and pills to help my back. i used to take narcotics and had to leave that behind. so i know of what i speak when it comes to bad backs! when you're recovered, maybe try swimming. it worked for me. there's a ton of different things for you to try that will work with your back. try to find it. a lot of these guys turned into bikers, hikers, runners, swimmers and all kinds of athletes.
now a heads up. you will lose a lot slower than other guys. they can drop 100 in a matter of a couple months. it's all about percentage as Dx says. so you will drop slower.
so all i know is i would have been over 300 easy in a few more months before surgery. i was creeping there and lost any will to diet anymore. nothing worked. i gave up lifting, something i did my whole life. i didn't exercise, nothing. i gave up. but it's not about me right now. it's about YOU. freaking out is normal unless you get off the table as they're wheeling you in. i say, sit back and enjoy the ride. just come here every single day, post, read and get involved. it's the best thing you can do for your head. good luck....carbonblob
