Tested dumping syndrome

As others have said you are a big boy and it is your choice.  I for one would not want to test the waters in that manner.  On the other hand my surgeon had me on semi-solid food 5 days after surgery but not solid foods for a month.  And then each food item was introduced slowly. The down  side to experimenting for me would be learning I can eat all those unhealthy foods.  I am better off taking the docs and nutiritionist word for it.  If I could eat those fatty, sugary foods like I did before, I can assure you I would be right back there doing it.   And none of this speaks to the medical danger you create for yourself this soon after surgery.  Your pouch is swollen and will be for several months.  So any "off limits" food is compounded by the inability of your pouch to 1) hold the food, 2) digest the food and 3) move it on down the line. Good luck with your journey.  I hope your experiments don't backfire on you. Rich

"Anyone else do food tests within week 1 or 2 of surgery?  Any ramifications?" I followed my surgeons advice 100%.  This is the warning that my surgeon gave me, "Until your pouch heals the only thing holding it together are the staples used during the surgery and there are no staples that a patient can't rip out if they try hard enough."

Yeah, I pushed the diet phases a bit. I'll admit it, but I won't ever recommend it to anyone else.

My prescribed diet was 2 weeks of iquid post-op, followed by 2 weeks of soft food. Past four weeks, I could eat what I wanted, so long as it fit the low carb regimen. Towards the end of liquid and soft, I started with stuff for the next phase, out of sheer boredom. Always, I went slow, and I knew not to eat a lot because of an unfortunate incident chugging water (I was thirsty and forgot, resulting in about 5 minutes of exquisite pain). I had no ill effects from trying egg and the like a couple of days early, but I'm also a fast heal, and I was expecting trouble I didn't get. Someone who is a slow heal, or has gorging issues, could be seriously screwed trying what I did. Peritonitis is a ***** My first (legal) soft food? Tuna salad, just the way I always made it, but run through a blender. It went down *SOOOO* easily. The one thing I would have liked was a way to experience dumping, just so I knew what to expect. Three years out, and it still happens on occasion

My doc was liberal and cleared me for soft foods after only 5 days.  That said, I began testing on day 4 by having some chicken salad.   Not too much of a risk.  But a cadbry egg?  Keelber cookies?  I'm now 7 weeks out and on Easter I tested my first sweets, some 72% cocoa mix, low fat, low sugar.   No dumping. I will agree that I believed I had that iron stomach as well, but it's in your head.  Give it time, friend.  You might slip up and not follow your self imposed protocols and do some long term damage. Good Luck. Guy

Play hard or go home.

I'm so scared of screwing this deal up that I'm still drinking my slim fasts low carb and skim milk with carnation instant breakfast!  I have been tempted, however, to try tuna fish with honey mustard...but I figure I'll be able to try that soon enough, why ru****  Just be careful with whatever you do!

Dude, don't get the wrong idea, we're not 'yellin at ya' for eating sugar.. LOL... we're worried about ya hurting your new pouch by eating solid foods too soon. Dale

My surgeon cleared me for eggs, tofu and tuna salad at Day 8. By Day 15 I was cleared for crackers, sourdough bread (well toasted) and even fish and have had no problems. I think each person is different and although I know where you're coming from as far as "testing your limits", I still am only going as far as my doctor's office is clearing me for. That means when they cleared me for something, like eggs, I ate that thing extremely slowly and really let it go down and get a feel for it.

One thing the doctor told me that really stuck with me was that you could eat something or do something you're not supposed to that could damage your pouch and cause you pain and suffering for up to two months! That could mean going back on full liquids during that time and I would hate that.

I actually dumped in the hospital off of the gastrogrifin fluid they made me drink on day 1 post-op so it scared me enough to not want to eat anything with stuff in it that would make me dump. I'm just hoping that memory will last as I am usually a hard-head, kinda like you probably are...
