Tested dumping syndrome

Ya, a guy back in my hometown had WLS and was going crazy on the liquid diet as well. He decided to try out some solid foods a couple weeks after WLS and ended up in ICU with a blown pouch. The dumb ass nearly died but hey, different strokes for different folks.

I need to add that Les' dumb ass near-death experiment in "piizzzza-ville" proved to be a godsend for me personally. Since it happened a couple of months before my WLS, I learned a very valuable lesson which was to follow the WL surgeons' orders to a T no matter how frickin' hungry I got. From what I hear, Les never did get with the program and is continually complaining about how WLS doesn't work. My sister is a RN at the local hospital so she provides me with the skinny. Boner

Here's the condensed  version of Lester the Jester (aka fool or buffoon) and his WLS walk with death.   Less than 2 weeks after WLS, Les' wife and kids supposedly were enjoying piizzza for dinner. Nice support group, huh? Les decided to partake in a slice and washed it down with a diet soda no less. I don't know for sure but I presume Les didn't puree the piizzza prior to stuffing it down his gullet. Also, remember the no carbonation rule? Les didn't. Remember, the no drinking one hour before or after you eat rule? Les didn't.   One slice turned into another then pow.....his pouch gave out as he ruptured the stables. Remember that "my stomach is going to burst" feeling we used to get before WLS after a major pigout? Well, his actually did burst as his pouch wasn't even close to being healed.   Les was rushed to the local hospital, then airlifted to Omaha. With piizzza and diet soda ooozing in his innerds, Les got an infection which put him within a pepperoni of biting the big one.  Les recovered eventually but, like I said, he never did get with the WLS program of nutrition and exercise. He did lose a bunch of weight initially but eventually gained most of it back. His story is actually a great text book case study of "how not to be successful with WLS" but more importantly, how you can end up dead by not considering the seriousness of the surgery. Boner

I'm disappointed now. I took the original comments to mean he saw the light at the end of the tunnel, and it was the Domino's guy waiting for him. That would have been a good story. For the rest of you guys following along, blowing out your pouch doesn't happen once the healing is over, save for someone with some serious connective tissue disease. It can happen for a fresh post-op, such as the guy above.

I'm eleven months out tomorrow and with that said have had only one real negative experience, I threw up for over six hours, three in the ER. I swore never to push the envelope again. I've never dumped, but I've never tried to dump either. I've eaten cookies yes some with sugar some sugar free. I've had small amounts of ice cream but virtually no portions that would come close to the sizes of the past. My health seems to be excellent for a man approaching 60 and I'm happy. I wish you good luck, but you better be very careful.

I have also heard the horror stories of a constricted pouch and near death experiences from individuals that didn't stick to the diet for the first few weeks.   Your pouch is still swollen and healing and adding solid foods isn't going to help the healing process.  Why test the waters this early out?   You will have the rest of your life to do that man.   My suggestion would be to use this first 6 months (your honeymoon period) to your advantage and exercise and much and as often as you can.   Maximize your weight loss now because after 6 months it will slow down.

Also, I'm not and never have been on the "Chad, you cannot eat for the rest of your life!"  That's bull**** and it's why people fail with diets and ultimately with the patients that gain weight afterwards.   You can't tell someone to quit eating a food they enjoy and expect them to do that longterm.   It's all about MODERATION and EXERCISE.    Moderate eating the foods you enjoy and establish an exercise plan for the rest of your life and you will be successful.

Sorry man I still think it's just too soon for you to be testing things out.   Your doc would probably agree as well.   Wait around 3 more weeks when your pouch is fully healed and then test away if you must.

I'm with Uncle Baccala, Boner, Chad and the other "ol timers" on this one. I wouldn't pu**** and risk having a major problem like a leak , blown pouch , etc. Why would you do that? Doesn;t make any sense to me, but, like others have said, you are a big boy and can make your own choices. I just hope you don't screw yourself up pushin it to hard.

I'll save the long story but I waited a few months before I started screwing myself up.
