8 Days out...? about protein

That's what I was afraid of...someone saying to use those damned bullet things.  I had gotten 3 of them the other day and well I tried one (the Blue Raspberry) and just about vomited so I returned the other 2.  I guess I could just hold my nose and down it, but you know I really want something that tastes good (doesn't have to be GREAT just tolerable) and won't make me gag.  The walmart chocolate whey protein is the best I've tried so far, I will say.  But if you do put it in the blender like I like to do it does basically just turn to foam, which is not fun to drink if you've never drank foam before lol. I did get the Carnation instant breakfast stuff and that is actually pretty fair.  And I also can't wait until I can at least have eggs or peanut butter or something because then getting the protein in won't be a big deal.  So I guess I'll try and find that Nectar stuff if you think that tastes pretty good.  Has anyone had the protein powder called Whey Gourmet?  And if so, where can I find it?  So far I've just been able to find it online.

I attend 3 support meetings a month, and I've heard feedback on those protein bullets. Most that I've talked to that actually use them tend to agree with you. But some still use them. BUT, they pour half of the bullet into a water bottle, and fill up the rest of the bottle with a like flavor of Fuze or Crystal Lite. They say that makes it tolerable. I don't remember the brand, but there are some unflavored whey proteins out there. You could add berries, or bananas, or other non sugary flavors to these for the protein you'll need. Some folks can never get enough protein due to poor appetitites or food choices, so they rely on these protein supplements for long range health.  I still take about 3-4 protein drinks per week, and I'm 22 months out.  I'd rather be safe, than have health issues for not getting enough protein.  I choose to err on the side of caution.

As I was sitting here reading your question, and the answer was right in front of me. I am drinking what is my all time favorite protein drink. It is called Lean Body made by Labrada Nutrition. www.leanbody.com . I use the pre mixed drink it is 17 oz and has 40 grams of protein, 260 calories, 9 fat, 0 sugar. To me the chocolate tastes like a frosty from Wendys. I have tried there other powdered mixes and they are good also.

That's a good suggestion, but gosh that's a very costly product.  If I'm going to have to do this for the rest of my life I can't be taking out loans to reach my protein goal!  That's about like the Muscle Milk stuff from GNC...you get a little but pay a lot.  Has anyone tried the GNC liquid calcium?

Cutting the ‘Whey Shots’ with water or Crystal-lite is the suggestion here I was going to offer as well. By themselves they taste terrible, cut about 4water to 1 shot, they are fine. Hang in there. These first weeks suk for everyone. Before you know it, you’ll be able to get most (if not ALL) of your protein through food alone. Best Wishes- Dx

I know what you mean.  I have given away over $100. of protein powder I couldn't stand.  Your taste change after WLS, it becomes hard.  What I would do is go to the LA Forum.  See when the next support group meets.  Ask any of the people on the OH LA Forum if they could bring small amounts of their protein powder.  Taste each one and see which one you can handle.  The people in the California Board have done this and it has really helped the newbies.  Brian

Whatever you do, just remember that anything over 30 grams of protein and you are wasting your money.  Your body will only tolerate about 30 grams of protein at one time, thus you are wasting the rest.  Mnay people have said they are getting 40g a pop, but keep in mind the body is not using that.  It is essentially excess waste the body will not use.  Just spread it out the best you can.  Many old timers have said the best way is to get the powder form, use 2-3 ounces of water and shoot it like a shot.  Get it done and over with quick.  There are lots of options available to you, just be smart about what you chose.  Try adding ice, artificial sweeteners, diet cocoa, etc.  It can be done.  And by the way, those 5Grams you are adding to water adds up = 64 ounces of water drank daily = 20 grams right there if you are drinking 16 ounce bottles.  Every little bit help and your body will use that amount easily and not waste it.  Just remember that protein is the key to your weight loss.  Don't skimp on this or your fluids ever.  Taz
