Hello guys, I found Scott's obituary on the Ponca City News website as Barb suggested on Boner's recent post and thought you might want to read it. Here it is. (Rest in peace, brother.) Scott Alan McAreavey

Scott Alan McAreavey, former Ponca City resident, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008, in Woodridge, Ill. He was 42.

Family and friends will gather to celebrate his life at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, in the Ponca City Poncan Theater. Local arrangements are under the direction of the Trout Funeral Home and Crematory. A Memorial Mass will be said at 10:30 on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at St. Patricks Catholic Church in Montrose, S.D., with burial following under the direction of Kingzley Funeral Home in Salem, S.D.

Scott Alan McAreavey, son of Paul and Nancy Barkmeier McAreavey, was born in Sioux Falls, S.D. He graduated from high school in Elk Point, S.D., in 1983. He continued his education at Mount Marty College in Yankton, S.D., and earned a Juris Doctorate at Pepperdine University in Malibu Beach, Calif. in 1990.

Scott's career accomplishments included being a partner with the law firm of Gillette, Beaty, and McAreavey in Redfield, S.D., from 1991 to 1995. His career progressed to business manager at Northern Therapy and Rehabilitation in Ponca City from 1996 to 2007. His current position was director of operations for Midwest Fuel Injection in Bolingbrook, Ill., until the time of his death.

Scott loved life and lived it to the fullest. One of his greatest passions was music, and he thoroughly enjoyed going to concerts. He was a devoted "Parrothead" and had attended more than 40 Jimmy Buffett concerts across the country. He also had belief in the Chicago Cubs that only a true fan would know. He loved the adventure in traveling and made many new friends wherever he went. Scott was also very involved in the lives of his family and friends.

Survivors include his parents, Paul and Nancy McAreavey; fiancé, Barbara Rollins and her parents Don and Margaret Welch, all of Ponca City; siblings, Todd and Tracy McAreavey of Tonkawa, Darin and Renae McAreavey of Elk River, Minn., and Jason and Kim McAreavey Quam of Elk Point, S.D.; nieces and nephews, Preston, Shelby, Taylor, Trenton, Rian and Anne; aunts, uncles, cousins and numerous friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Don and Alyce McAreavey and Vincent and Maxine Barkmeier; one uncle, Joel Barkmeier; and one aunt, Mary Scheafer.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, a kind deed to others be shown in Scott's memory.

Honorary casket bearers will be John Shymanski, Jason Snyder, Marc LaBossiere, Erik Peitz, Jeff Slade and Ben Seidel.

dang .. he was only 42???    Looks like he did so much more in his lifetime than I have in my 46+ years ..   Odd how, although you didn't know someone, you read about their past and so many things in common pop up, making you almost feel like you did:  (1) the name "Paul" (mine and his dad's) (2) Ponca City, OK ..  one of my favorite uncles and aunts were residents of Ponca City for many years and my uncle passed away there (he worked for Ditch Witch, a major employer there)  (3) both BIG Buffett fans (I was a member of two local Parrothead fanclubs) .. (4) both had WLS and lost 200+ lbs.  (5) both lawyers (6) both lived in Missouri and went to school in K.C. (he for high school, me for law school) (7) he was a grad of Pepperdine Law .. I wanted SO badly to get into Pepperdine ... although my mom had attended undergrad at their downtown L.A. campus, I still didn't get accepted.  If I had been accepted,  ironically, I would have entered in '89 and would have probably known him, since that would have been his last year in school there ..  (I wonder if Pepperdine would consider setting up a scholarship in his memory, possibly for students that have had WLS (?)    I can't help but wonder if they played that oh so peaceful, self-retrospective Buffett tune at his funeral  --  A Pirate Looks At 40?  It would seem so befitting ..   Doug .. did you find anything on his cause of death?  I noticed the earlier post mentioned suspected "foul play" ..  how did he die?  Seems the authorities should have finished any investigation by now ..

Thanks Russ for posting Scott's obituary. What a frickin' crime to have been given a second lease on life via the WLS gift, do everything right to take advantage of it, begin reaping the rewards by doing all the things you've always wanted to do but couldn't, THEN....... I'm just glad he was able to get in a great year or so of the new Scott before he passed away. Scott was obviously a good man with a great heart and didn't deserve this type of ending. All I know is look out for the Cubs this year........ Boner

It's with an extremely heavy heart that I let you guys know that one of our most outstanding locker room old timers recently passed away. Scott's fiance, Barb just let me know that Scott died on Jan. 23 in Chicago. According to Barb, he had recently moved there from Oklahoma for a new job and was very excited about the opportunity. She was going to move to Chicago in May to join him after he got settled in. The cause of death is still being investigated by the police but they suspect foul play was involved.  . Please take a moment to look at Scott's profile, say a prayer for him and his family and leave a message to Barb in his profile. Scott was a great person and a real winner in life. He was very instrumental in building up the men's OH.com board and helped motivate many of us in our WLS journey. He will be sorely missed. .   "And while there were many times going up that hill I considered stopping and walking, I kept thinking of my buddies in the locker room at OH and all they've accomplished..." . http://www.obesityhelp.com/member/headparrot/

Thanks for posting this Doug. I tried to find it but didn't. As I said on the other thread, it is too sad that he went through the WLS and re-claimed his life only to have it ended too early by foul play. Hope they catch em and fey em!
