Hey Guys, New to the forum.  I'm scheduled for Surgery March 31st.  I'm trying to gather the things I'm going to need to get through the first few weeks.   I had a good friend advice me about the liquid protein called new Whey. Does anyone have any experience with this protein?  I'm al little concerned about it.  I just want to make sure I get the right protein to see me through the liquid diet and soft food diet. I apologize if this has already been covered. Thanks for the input. Jeff

Welcome aboard Jeff! Lots of great info and support here, as well as some good ol' fashioned BS'ing too!!  I'm waiting on insurance approval myself.

Its taken me over a year to get insurance approval.  I had Aetna and they yanked me around about diet and wanting me to use their nutritionist.  It was a HMO type plan which meant I had to stay in network to have them cover it.  The did not want to use my bariatric surgeons nutritionist becaude they throught it was a conflict of interest.  The closest nutritionist in network was 3 hours away.  Plus since I did not have documented proof by a doctor about all the diets I have been involved in they wanted me to go through another 6 months of doctor led diet.  But here is the gotcha, they would never tell me what a approved diet was.  So as soon as I had the oportunity I fired them.  I moved to BCBS PPO Plan.  Beleive it or not they have been awesome.  From the inception I had a individual call the house announcing she would be specifcally deddicated to my case.  Things have just clicked since January.  I have a physical and heart clearence scheduled this thursday and then on the 27th I have preadmission testing.  To be honest I'm almost scared something is going to screw it all up at the last minute. You hang in there it will work out if you want it bad enough.  I'm not stopping. nascar-stewart-scroll1.jpg image by jmatteol Anyone watch the race.  Who's fault was it that number 20 crashed?

You know, I bought a bunch of this stuff just before my surgery, and I think I was hornswoggled.  So-called New Whey" seems to be made of "hydrolyzed collagen", a VERY incomplete protein (to the best of my knowledge).   I think they should have called it "No Whey", or "No Way!"  42 grams of protein, when it's not protein that the body can take advantage of, isn't much of a bargain to your wallet or your body. I never used any of it.  /Steve

I've used New Whey for about 18 months. It's one of the few protein supplements I like enough to use regularly.  It's been around for quite a while.  Give it a try I think you'll like it better than the powdered supplements.  It's pretty convenient too, comes premeasured in plastic "vials" of 28 G or 42 G,  I buy the 42's and split half in am and half in PM now that I am getting a lot of protein from foods again. Good Luck with your surgery!

I use the liquid whey 42 oz. everyday...It is one of my "guaranteed" sources for protein. Initially, I tried to drink it like a shot; however, it tasted like crap...I now mix it with water and the crystal lite "on the go" lemonaid mix...I think it taste very good. After a few months, you will be able to drink it while at work all in one hit. The Grape and Raspberry taste the best to me...the others are too "fruity"

I like the New Whey, and I use it, and I think foobear might be right! CB

I had my RNY on Feb 27th.  I bought a case of the 42 protein before my surgery.  They are pretty bad tasting, but i found that if you mix it with ur water, its easier to get down.  I think you should also try the Stalone Puddings, they were a life saver for me, they have 20 grams of protein.  I also ate lots of yogurts, and lots of water.  I'm down 47 pounds in just 3 weeks, its awsome.  Good luck.. I would suggest that you not buy much protein until after your surgery because your tastes may change immediately following the surgery.  You may want to get a sample of various proteins from one of the companies that advertise on this site.
