I know that you have heard this a million times but here it is again.   You are an inspiration to us all.  I for one hope to be in the shape that you are in someday.  Congrats.

Hey Chad, congrats again. I have a couple questions for you, if you don't mind. You mentioned a carbo loading dinner, gel packs and granola bars.  I immagine those sit ok with you.  Did it take you time to be able to eat that stuff, or was it always ok with your stomach. What is a typical meal like for you prior to a race.  I can see burning a lot of energy.   Is it hard to keep the energy up and stay hydrated etc etc. Thanks Scott

Hey Scott.

I do have a limit but I'm really don't dump on carbs as much as I do from high fat foods.   I can eat a gel pack every hour or so on a race and it doesn't hurt me.   As far as granola bars and such.  I eat the Ka****rail mix bars and the honey nut flax bars all the time.

The carb loading dinner that the race put on the night before the event consisted of a slab of lasagna, salad, a bannana and a sugar cookie.   I ate 75% of my lasagna, 2 bannanas, 2 cookies and all of the salad.   I was pretty stuffed but I can eat like a normal person now.   Nothing compared to pre-op where I could have probably eaten an entire pan of lasagna and 12 cookies.

During the race, unfortunately, I have to rely on the gel packs which I friggin' hate.   I tried energy jelly beans and the cliff shot blocks for the tri over the weekend but since I finished in under two hours I couldn't really guage if anything worked or not.   I'm doing a quarter-Ironman at the end of the month which will probably be 4 - 5 hours and hopefully I'll be able to tell then what worked.   During the marathon I was in full dump mode towards the end of the race from the gel packs.   I didn't have a choice though.  I had to eat something or I was going to collapse from exhaustion.

Thanks for all the info, I appreciate it. I don't know if I could ever convince myself to try a marathon, but I do like the idea of some 5-10 runs and perhaps a Sprint Tri.  I now have another goal beyond the weight loss. Thanks for sharing your stories with us. Scott

Thanks for all the comments guys.   Next race is a Quarter IronMan distance (.6 mi swim / 28mi bike / 6.5mi run) race in Galveston, TX at the end of this month.   The swim is open water in the Gulf of Mexico so it sould be interesting.  :)

You guys are the inspiration.  Keep up the good fight!

Chad.

I signed up for the first annual New Orleans Ironman 70.3 (1.2m swim / 56 mi bike / half-marathon run) at the beginning of next year.  I'm training for that now with my goal of getting into the Championship Series full Ironman in Kona, Hawaii in 2009.   I'm seriously lacking in the swim big time right now so I'm having to up my swim slowly to get in at least 5 miles a week in addition to trying to get in weight lifting, running and biking.   I have 12 months to train for the half Ironman and 17 months for the full Ironman.   I think I'm gonna be ready!
