Life is Great

Well my friends, things are going great for being 4 days post op.  I have no hunger pangs at all.  My energy level is good.  I am drinking 60 ounces of fluid and getting 46 grams of protein per day right now - which is what my surgeon wants this first week postop.  The fluid drinking is the toughest - I have to constantly be drinking all day long - this is mind blowing considering that there was a time (when I had a regular stomach) I could chug a 20 ounce drink in about 30 seconds to a minute.  Who would have guessed it would now take me 2-3 hours.  I was prepared for this thanks to the wisdom of many of you guys here on the mens forum though.  The weight loss portion is unbelievable - Yesterday I woke up and 3 pounds gone overnight, today I wake up and 2 more pounds gone overnight.  I know for a fact this is legitimate weight lost and not fluid weight - I went into the hospital weighing 335, day I came home I weighed 334.  Today I weigh 329.  This is amazing so far.  Walking is not a problem either and I am sure it will help to keep on losing the weight.  So far so good.  What do you guys think?

I think you're doing great. This is like being shot out of a cannon. You have about 6 months of free fall before you hit the ground and life and weight loss issues become more normal again. Use this "honeymoon" time to establish your life changing patterns. Remember: If you want to change your life you must change your life". Exercise is very important because right now you are also loosing muscle mass. The exercise and portien intake will counter act that. I'm about 14 months out and if I wern't exercising I'm pretty sure I would not be happy with my weight. As it is, I still have 20 pounds that I just can't seem to get rid of. Anyway, enjoy the ride!

The inability to drink and having to sip was one of the things that really bummed me out the first few months but your tolerance to consume greater amounts of fluid at a time will increase the farther out you get.   At close to 2 years I can down a 16 -20 ounce bottle of water in 20 - 30 seconds easily.

Sounds like you are definately on the right track!

Chad, you don't know how glad I am to hear you say that.  It is a relief to know that I will one day again be able to drink water/crystal light like that - my surgeon assured me and my wife that I would be able to do that as well in the future, but it will take time.  The reason this is so important to me is that whenever I work out = walking/running/weightlifting/yard work, etc. - I always was a big sweating kind of guy.  Now, with the surgery this may change, but if not, I like knowing that I can get my fluids in by mouth if need be. Thanks for the comment.  Taz

I'm at the opposite end of the spectrum.  Effectively, I had no real restrictions whatsoever in consuming liquids since my RNY.  I am one month tomorrow and have NO issues doing 80+ oz a day.  This is a good thing for liquids because it allows me to get in a 48 gram protein shake in the morning.   The same "no-restriction" feeling went for solids until this past Saturday.  The vets on the board warned me, "restriction will come".  It did, and kind of hard.  No throwup or anything, just "foamies".  Took about 30 minutes to correct, and I have learned my lesson. As for the hunger pangs, they won't be around for quite some time either.  I'm still not feeling them after a month. Enjoy the begining of your adventure, it's a hell of a ride. Guy
Play hard or go home.
