Hey Guys i'm currently using Body Fortruss protein and was wondering if there is something better out there.  It has 110 calories per scoop (23g of protein). What do you guys use/recommend? i was considering buying ON Gold or Unjury Thanks Mark S

Boy you will probably get a lot of responses to this.  This is a very common question.  There really isn't a "best" protein supplement for everyone.  The one thing I've learned since having WLS is that the protein supplement  that works best is one that you will actually take regularly and that will be based on the individuals tastes. Personally I hate any kind of powdered supplement, mostly because it's inconvenient to take.  Thus I take the pre-made liquid proteins from IDS called New Whey which come in individual plastic tubes of either 25G or 42G that taste good and can be mixed into other liquids like crystal light.  GNC also has a liquid that doesn't taste as good but it's easy to take the recommended amounts. Here's some links to check out.  - New Whey is available from many sources.  http://www.affordablesupplements.com/newwhey_42.asp GNC http://www.gnc.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2133679&cp&sr=1&origkw=liquid+protein&kw=liquid+protein&parentPage=search The best of these two is probably the IDS because it has no CARBS. You likely could get 10 responses with 10 different answers.  In regards to protein it comes down to tolerance and taste preference.  In addition you may find that results may vary from brand to brand as well.  Cost can be a factor too, however when it comes to your health if you find something you like, delivers the desired results and most importantly is something you'll stick with - consider it an investment vs. a cost. That being said - Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard is what I use.  For me personally as far as taste, tolerance, results and cost it's the best I've found...that's for me personally. As far as Unjury is concerned - good quality product but pricey.  ON Gold also contains additional ingredients which I require with my regimen such as BCAA's, glutamine, etc. Body Fortress, ON, EAS, IDS, Labrada Leanpro, etc...it's a matter of what works best for you...don't be afraid to try several before settling.  For many of us the protein supplementation is a life-long commitment so it's good idea to find something you like. This is largely a matter of personal taste.  For shakes, I use Matrix vanilla by Syntrax.  For bars, I like Atkins Caramel Cookie.  I order on line since I have difficulty with mobility.  My wife gets regular groceries, but she couldn't be bothered looking for the specialty items.

Another good source of a "snack" with good protein is the South Beach Diet cereal bars.  Two of the varieties (peanut butter and oatmeal raisin) have 10MG of protein with about 140 calories.  They make good snacks that satisfy the sweet tooth while still delivering the protein we need. JP

Cards Fan said you'd get 10 responses with 10 different answers.  To help prove him right, I'll give you one response with 70 different answers.  Here is a link to a summary of a testing of 70 different protein powders I did.  It provides recommendations, and further links to tables which provide detailed reviews of all samples. My 2 further recommendations: 1. If possible avoid buying a lot of anything until you're certain you like it.  I have a lifetime supply (4.5 pounds) of ON Strawberry. I was certain I'd like it, but it's gross and I can't even make myself hold my nose and gulp it.  Gets samples if you can.  If you must buy blind, vanillas and chocolates are the safest.  (And don't buy anything new until you're nearly finished with what you have, otherwise you'll never motivate yourself to fini****) 2. Even if you love it, don't buy too much.  Your patterns can change quickly.  Nine months ago I was doing two shakes a day and four months ago I probably averaged one.  A year out, it's less than one a week, and when I do have one it's always the same: a scoop of vanilla in my iced coffee as a creamer/sweetener.  Basically, I get more than ample protein from my food most days.  Luckily, my mom drinks the same kind I do, so my extra 6-pound bag got bartered to her for some clothing alterations.

Ard!

How's the journey been? Has the recent situation left you more or less busy? You know what I'm talkin about.

If anyone is picky about protein taste, then avoid the Now whey stuff. I bought a big bag of it, and not only do I have to chew every time I drink some, it tastes pretty raunchy.

Buuttt.. if it is as high in BCAA's as the bag indicates and you believe that BCAA's build muscle faster, it may be the substance for you.

Dave, Life is pretty busy.  Less TV and Internet these days to make room for the extra time with the gf and the various home improvement projects I've undertaken.  I was also doing a lot of working and a lot of traveling, but both have slowed down.  On the WLS front, I had an extended stall, but I've corrected a couple problems and things are slowly moving again.  I'm wearing 36" pants today (slightly snug, I'm more like 37"), a trick I haven't performed since childhood. Hope all is well in Japan.  Still carrying buses on your back for fun, I see.  You must turn a few heads around town.  (More or less than when you were just a fat white guy?)

Like has already been stated, this is a lot about personal taste. I like Labrada LeanBody. It has a really good taste,IMO, and if it tastes good, you don't mind drinking it.  Here is the info on it:

  • Incredible Taste! Lean Body is the best tasting meal replacement powder (MRP) ever made. That's why the American Culinary Institute awarded Lean Body its Gold Medal Taste Award for five years in a row.
  • 50/30/20 (protein/carbohydrate/fat) ratio of macronutrients consisting of highly bio-available, time-release strength, and higher energy, all day long!
  • 40g of LeanPro™ proprietary blend of fast-release and slow-release proteins, to give you a sustained flow of vital amino acids. Amino acids support intracellular nitrogen retention levels for faster muscle growth and stength increases.
  • Over 8,000 mg of Glutamine & Glutamic Acid. Studies show that supplemental gluatamine can also prevent muscle breakdown.
  • 24 grams of an advanced blend of high-fiber carbohydrates to help stabalize your blood sugar and insulin levels, to promote greater energy and fat burning.
  • 8 grams of FiberPlex™ dietary fiber per serving, providing over 30% of the RDA for fiber to support superior intestinal health and cardiovascular health.
