HOLY CRAP!! Are they trying to scare us out of the surgery or what?
What my surgeon did was have a large group meeting of all potential patients. This was a few months before surgery (about 20 at a time). He would then go through the list line by line. That really helped alot. Let me say this, for the three most common surgeries (RNY, Lap Band, DS) they have all perfected them. They know what they are doing and they have learned from their mistakes. An example for RNY...The reason you have so much gas and air through your system...They blow tons of air in there to check for leaks in the pouch. Years ago they would have to do a upper GI days after surgery to see if there were leaks. For most WLS patients, the rewards really out weight the risks. Many of the risks can be managed. But honestly, most WLS candidates are a heart attack just waiting to happen too. Bama, good on you for not going into this blindly. Brian

Hey Bob...
You would be supprised at how many of these same complications can come from getting an ingrown nail removed....
on the social mal adjustment...do think that is becoming a food nazi to everyone around you??

Thanks for the replies guys. I understand there may be some complications with ANY surgery so they have to cover their azzes. I have had a pacemaker implanted, a heart stent implanted, 4 surgeries on my right shoulder, an appendectomy, and a shattered little finger rebuilt. I had to sign a release on every one, but not even the heart surgeries had as many complications listed. It just struck me as almost overkill (no pun intended) that they would have every possible complication except hemmoroids listed for WLS.

Whoops, that's one they forgot! After fighting with roughly two episodes of life-threatening constipation each month (due almost always to drinking too little fluids and forgetting to take the Colace), I can honestly say now that hemorrhoids ARE a potential complication of WLS.
I hope that's not a deal-breaker for you!

That's exactly why I tell people who ask me.. "This should be your last resort". I got in trouble over on the main board for suggesting some people see this surgery as the 'quick fix' or 'easy way out'.
Some blew up at me, but some confirmed that for them... it WAS.
All those risks gave me pause for several years. I found one excuse after another NOT to have the surgery. Now that I've had it, I'm amazed at how smoothly it went. Sure I've had a couple issues... but nothing major.
For me it was considering what MIGHT happen, with what WOULD happen if I didn't get the weight off. Doc had already basically said he didn't think I'd see 50. Like he said, how many old, 600 pound men do YOU know?
