Invading to ask a question of Male Bandsters
Hi Guys!
Just a question I have to help a friend. I have a colleague that is about 6'4" 460 who is interested in the Lap Band. Personally, I don't think this is his best choice, but I'm admittedly biased since I didn't choose the band for myself. However, it's his body and his choice, and being the only other WLS patient in my building, I'm serving as part of his support system.
If there are any of you out there who have lost down to a >30 BMI, could you speak up here? Let me know how long it took you and if you did anything special. I really want my colleague to have the best possible chance at success with his band. I know all of the statistics, but I think I'd like hearing from real people who've had real success.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me! Sorry for invading the Man Board!

Bronwen,
I had lap-band on July 2, 2007. I am 6'1" and started my journey at 306 pounds. I lost 15 pounds pre surgery. So I was at 291 on the date of surgery. In 7 months, 3 weeks I have lost 73 pounds and as of this Sunday I weighed 218. 18 more pounds to goal.
It has been a journey that has involved discipline and work like any of the other surgeries. I would encourage your friend to educate himself on all the surgery options and not to settle on lap-band because it sounds easier. Like the others, there are pros and cons. However, we all must settle the issue for ourselves and then work, work and work the tool to achieve our goal.
When I say work here is what I mean for me. I have monitored my weight weekly, monitored my diet to include journaling when the stalls came along to see what I was eating, and exercising 3 to 5 days a week since six weeks post op.
I would be glad to answer any other questions you or your friend might have. Just let me know.
