Gallbladder Removal and WLS

So, I got the news that my Gallbladder has to come out on March 3rd. I had a pretty good episode with it that lasted about 6 hours and I thought something was wrong with my bypass. I asked my surgeon this but I am interested in what some of you may have been told. It seems like people with WLS seem to have a Gallbladder removed more than those without it. My surgeon says that GB Removal is the most common sugery performed in the US and that obesity is a big contributing factor and since people that have Gastric Bypass are by definition obese then it just seems like they have more problems with the Gallbladder. Maybe that is all there is to it, but it sure seems like it rears its head a lot with people that have had WLS and dropped some serious weight. Luckily my RNY surgeon Dr Kim, is doing my Gallbladder, he says I may be one of the last ones, if not the last one that he does. He has done about 10,000 of them, but time is becoming an issue for him with everything else he has going on. So I feel fortunate to have him doing mine. Sorry I havent been around much, living life and spending way less time on the computer lately. Troy

I had my GB out a week prior to surgery. I was told I had stones, they were found in the pre op tests for by pass. I didn't have any problems or pain from them but my surgeon said I would. In and out the same day. By far the easiest procedure I went through. pan head

My surgeon always removes the gallbladder as part of the WLS procedure ..  He says the stats are just too high for MO or SO persons having gallbaldder problems later in life, and a very high rate following major, rapid weight loss, to not just snip it out while he's in there ..  (apparently it only takes a few cuts and stitches and it's a done deal) ..

My RNY doc said that 1 in 3 RNY patients will need to have their gall bladder removed post-op. Because of the 2 in 3 that don't, he does not routinely remove it during surgery. Joe

I was told that during surgery they would check Gallbladder if it was bad it would go. They also said the high rate of Gallbladder surgery post op is usually because patients don't get in their protein levels daily. C' Ya Bob

Hey Troy, I had mine taken out the same time I had my RNY.  My surgeon thought it best as I apparently already had gallstones. Good luck. John
