Hey Guys, Know anything about fluid retention and possible causes?
Can anyone shed some light on chronic fluid retention and what might cause it. I know the "big picture" answers, usually it's either heart disease or kidney disease. And, of course, I know (boy do I know) that salt intake has a big effect on this. I am kind of wondering about this. I eat any little bit of salt, and just blow up. Had a little tiny bit of Chinese food on Friday and Saturday (portion wise, I was strictly by the book), and it was healthy but salty. I was really thirsty saturday, and despite taking my normal 2 x daily lasix, next to nothing came out. I'm up 4 lbs this morning since yesterday. I'm always VERY cautious about salt intake, and cook mostly from scratch. But, sodium is SO pervasive in foods, it's hard no matter what you eat. And, every once in a while, you HAVE to go out and home something, sodium or no sodium. Not anything to panic about short term, since this is what ALWAYS happens, whenever I have any salt at all. But, I'm starting to get a little freaked out about the long-term implications of this. I was checked out really thoroughly last summer by a cardiologist for my pre-surgical clearance, so I think my heart is in remarkably good shape for my body size. I wonder more about kidney disease. My paternal grandfather died of polycystic kidney disease in the 1950's, before dialysis and transplant. And, I am a type II diabetic, albeit my A1C's have never been all that high. I know some of these diseases are genetic. At any of my physicals, my kidney function from routine urinalysis is normal. Liver stuff is elevated, but I attribute that to fatty liver, common in the severely morbidly obese, and I gather it goes away as you lost weight. I guess next time I have my physical, this summer, I'll have to discuss this with my PCP. Well, I'm down 80 lbs in 4 months, so it's not like I'm a total slouch -- about 35 pre-op and 45 post-op. I hope increased weight loss will help this situation.
