Restricted (less)- Opinions??

It seems as if I have not nearly enough restriction.  Here's my situation: I was turned loose on the Phase II pureed foods today after faithfully (almost) doing the clear liquids for 5 days per the doc.  Went to see him today, explained that drinking 80oz of liquids wasn't even a challenge.  He said I probably just had good healing at the stoma and everything was flowing right through.  Now last night, in anticipation of going to Phase II, I made 14oz of pureed chicken fat free salad and portioned them into 4 (4 oz containers.  One was light)' I felt pretty good and decided to cautiously taste my preparation. Ended up eating the 3oz container slowly and felt ABSOLUTELY no restriction.  But I stopped just being careful. Today, liquid breakfeast, doc appointment at 10:00,back for lunch and had a 4 oz.  No stomach full feeling, no liquids with meal, but I stopped just to be sure.  Just made some egg beaters for dinner, at 5 oz, no restriction. I'm a little worried about this.  Right now I can control my input pretty well.  But what do you guys think may be the issue?  I should feel stuffed after 30 CC or 2 oz or so and that is not the case. I plan on talking to the Doc, but I want to establish a pattern first. Everything else is great, down 21 pounds in 12 days, no pain, no fevers, BP dropping, walking 2-3 miles a day, life is good. Opinions? Thanks men. Guy

It sounds like you're absolutely typical.  It seems to take several weeks before you feel any restriction, especially when you're immediately post-op and still in the liquids or puree stage.  By the time you've transitioned to real food, believe me, you'll feel the restriction!  Liquids and purees don't stay in your pouch for long. At 6PM, I'm still digesting my lunchtime meal of 2 smallish, well-chewed, marinated, sirloin steak tips and a few bites of salad.  That is, I can still feel it in my pouch.  (I don't have this every day or even every week, but that's what I could get today at the time.) /Steve

Im the same as Steve.  Many substanceless foods pass through pretty easy, crackers, milk, popcorn, peanuts.  But if I eat something heavier in content like meat, cheese, or something fiber rich, I feel full for 3 or 4 hours.

Hey Guy.... I'm LOL here...you just reminded me of a post of Dxe, some years ago, about being giddy with delite, at the thought of purred tuna with purred pickles.....(anything to get off liquids) now for me, purreed was anything you can get through a straw....right? of so.......you are still good.... but boss....let me tell you...i'm almost 3 years out...and I had rather swallow a hand full of carpet tacks rather than eat tuna... the restriction will come russ

Russ, Your aversion to ‘eating tuna’ made me shoot just a little coffee up into my nose! No "LOL" but rather…CQTS (chuckles quietly to self) Thanks for the smile. Best Wishes- Dx

Well .. here's my deal. My surgeon wanted me (as he does all of his patients, including my wife who is currently at the end of stage 1) has us hold the stages for three weeks instead of five days. I've lost 370 lbs overall (so far) from following his orders.  One bite every 10 minutes, an hour for a half sandwich - no liquids 30 min before and after eating.     I didn't push things that way, so I can't say I necessarily felt a restriction until I started eating real foods, and even then, I only feel it if I eat too fast.   I'm a firm believer that you have to do what works for you, but at the same time, early on (for the first six weeks, because it takes that long to heal), you CANNOT know what your limits are yet because you can't feel it yet. Just my opinion and relating what has worked for me. Good luck!

Thanks for the responses guys.  I think I need to talk with him a little more to discuss this.  He and the nutritionist were pretty focused on getting in the 60 grams of protein per day and it looks like either shakes or Isopure/cytosport for awhile. I was glad to hear that some guys felt no restriction for a while after surgery. Appreciate the opinions. Guy

Guy, I’m chiming in with the choir…. I didn’t have a feeling of "restriction" until I moved to complete solids. By then, I was pretty darn close to having fully established new habits. Keep in mind…. Feeling Satiated and "Not Hungry" is different than feeling "FULL." Which is VERY different from feeling Too Full. Shoot for "Not Hungry" and you’ll have it SO easy 2 years from now. (do stay all over your doc with questions however. Keep him on speed dial till you are at goal. ;-)  ) Best Wishes- Dx
