Protein Shakes and supplements
Where should I look to get educated on Protein shakes. I am in the home stretch of the six month diet and hopefully I will gain approval sometime in March. I have walked by GNC but never walked into the store.
Also any tips on supplements would be greatly appreciated. I have a really hard time swallowing large pills so anything chewable or liquid would be nice to find.

Randy
hey, just make sure it's whey protein powder. i wouldn't take more than 50 grams max at a time or you just **** out the extra protein.i just stick to protein, creatine, which you don't need. i use it for lifting. if you're older like me i've added glutomine and glucosimine to my regime. that's it besides what the doc says to take. you can go broke with this stuff so watch out. just go into gnc, get a gold card for the discount and try small samples of the stuff. it's all good for the most part. unless you are lifting you don't need all that much besides protein. the other stuff is for joints and recover from work outs....carbonblob
CB is right on.
I use the Atkins shakes myself. Readily available at WallyWorld of Target. They are very low in sugar.
Otherwise, I take GNC Men's Mega Gold Multi-Vit a day, an Omega-3 and Citrical 3 times a day.
They are horse pills, though. I did find a great liquid multi at Whole Foods, that I used early on. It burned like hell, though. I usually mixed it in some yogurt to take the edge off it. If you believe the hype, the liquid vitamins are absorbed much better than the pills.
Good luck.

Good advice on protein. I never found a liquid vitamin that didn't taste like crap. The best day I had after surgery was when I could start swallowing pills again. I didn't care how big it was, anything not to have to taste it.
If that is your daughter in your av, she is a beauty!!
Best of luck,

Hey Randy....

Go low or zero carbs....no need to drink your calories

I use the Isopure. I have been buying it off ebay lately. If protein is your only concern, you can find cheaper ones. I continue with Isopure because of all the vitamins and minerals it has that most do not. Speaking of vitamins I use Optisource chewable that I get from Walgreens on line, again you can get others cheaper, but this is one my surgeon recommends. They are suppose to be made for bariatric patients. I also take biotin and sublingual B-12. In the long run I still spend less on vitamins and protein than I use to on meds, that I no longer have to take. pan head

I agree about the point about not stocking up prior to the surgery. It sounds strange, but your tastes do change especially immediately following surgery.
I disagree with only having whey protein. The whey protein tastes better and mixes better, but you might be lactose intolerant for some time following the surgery and need Soy shakes. That's what happened to me. The taste and texture is pretty bad. Use sugar free flavoring like DavinciGourmet syrups or Crystal Lite to mask the flavor. I was lactose intolerant for 9 mos following my initial RNY but then I became able to use the whey protein.
