N.D.E -- Near Dumping Experience ????

Wow, karma IS a b***h!  After posting just a few hours ago about how lucky I've been overall with this thing, in terms of NOT being sick after my surgery, I just got a payback. I had my small dinner -- about two ounces of white turkey, about 1/4 cup each of mashed potatoes, bread stuffing, and maybe 1/4 cup of gravy, with 1 tablespoon of homemade, whole berry cranberry sauce done made with 1/2 sugar and 1/2 splenda, and about 1/3 cup of mixed fruit salad for dessert.  Ate this over about 30 minutes. I seemed O****il having the fruit salad.  I started feeling just full, so I stopped with the fruit.  After a few minutes, got kinda funky in the stomach feeling, just very full, not really thinking I was going to throw up, but not entire sure I wasn't -- this I'm used to -- either ate too fast or too much. But, what happened next was what was new -- started getting hot, with shakes and sort of a dizzy feeling, which came in waves.  Plus, a lot of rumbling in the stomach.  Ran into the bathroom, just in case, and draped myself over the counter.  Didn't throw up or anything.  After a while, the hot feeling has gone away, now I have chills and mild shakes.   So, was this dumping, or near dumping ?  I had EXACTLY the same things for lunch, no problem, and I can't believe that the sugar in the cranberry sauce was the problem -- I used about 1/3 cup of sugar to 1 lb of berries, which made maybe 2 1/2 cups of sauce total, and I had 1 tablespoon of it. I'm wondering about the turkey gravy -- it was kinda fatty.  I didn't get to make that, someone else did, and she didn't run it through the fat-seperator cup like I always do, so it's higher fat than I'm used to.  I didn't think it would be a problem, because I didn't have that much, and I'm supossed to get 50 grams of fat a day, which I don't usually make.

That wasn’t “Near” dumping, that was just plain ole run of the mill dumping. Most people who have dumping syndrome don’t “throw up” as a result, but most do have the hot shakes, rumbles, discomfort and chills. The gravy alone was probably not the culprit. Nor is it likely that the Cranberry sauce alone did it. But combining the simple carbs of the potatoes, bread stuffing, and the cranberry sauce, and the few bites of fruit and the gravy to let it all slide down quickly? Yep, that would likely do it. Hope you are feeling better soon. Now you know there’s a curb there, steer back this side of it to avoid future accidents. Best Wishes- Dx

Thanks, Dx, you always have a good answer. Funny, it wasn't exactly the end of the world experience I thought it might be, but it was unpleasant enough not to want to do it again.   Came fast, went fast.  I feel ok again now, not like running a marathon, but I suspect I'll live. The best part of going through this entire wls experience is just that -- the experience -- it really is a a matter of personal growth.  I know so much more about so many things than I did a year ago, when I first started thinking about doing wls again. No longer a dumping virgin. Dan

I had surgery a month before you and still haven't eaten a lot of the things you ate for dinner.  A lot of sugars, fats and carbs in what you listed.  Hope you take it easy and get back on course. Lou

I have the same thing if I eat a lot of starch, but usually 2-3 hours later. The episodes get a lot more intense if I haven't had any carbs for a while, then suddenly eat a lot.

Really sweet stuff gives me stomach pains, right away and that's all. Then it just goes away, no other symptoms. It's almost like the sweetness is irritating the pipes or causing them to spasm, rather than causing an actual dump.

Yeah man.  You dumped.  High fatty foods usually do that to me as well.   The sweaty, dizzy, sickly, weak feeling is exactly what it feels like.
