Just wondering and curious. Could you donate the extra skin for a fire victim and have the surgery for free?

February, 14. I am going in for my hernia and panniculectomy surgery. The PS will start with the skin removal, then the doctor who did my WLS will come in and do the hernia repair, then the PS and my WLS doctor will close. When the PS did the pre certification to my insurance co he put in for the panniculectomy and abdominoplasty but the insurance co (Aetna) denied the abdominoplasty because they said that part is cosmetic only and doesn’t effect day to day living. I thought what a bunch of bull, I would like to see them drag around all this loose skin for a few days and I think they would quickly change there minds. However after talking things over with both doctors they assured me they will make everything look great, and will cut and pull everything tight. Like the PS said it’s not like the insurance company is going to have some one in the operating room with a tape measure to watch how high up they are going to cut. They said I will be in surgery 5-6 hours, and about 5 drains. I go in on a Thursday and go home Saturday depending on how I feel and if I want I can stay until Monday. I am counting the days until the 14 I think the worst part of it for me will not being able to work out for 4-8 week because like you said I will be in that compression garment.  Oh yeah and the other good thing is the PS said it would be about 18-25 pounds of excess skin he will be removing.

Hello Joe... I have been very fortunate....I did a **** load of documentation...and the insurance covered everything....belly, butt, mr happy and thighs.... I agree with boner...no having to grease up everything between you shoulders and your knee caps to protect from a ra**** great...i didn't even know how bad it interuted my life....now I don;t even have to wear baby powder...1st time in my life.... I would say that it is worth it....but it is not instant gratification....when you wheel out of the OR, people will ask...was it worth it???...the best answer is ...ask me in 6 months..... I know you have seen them before, but I got some before suring and afters in a pdf....if anyone wants to see....shoot me an e-mail.... Russ

I tell ya, guys, the prospect of a powder-free life makes all the hassles of ps seem worth it--at least right now. I don't know if I'll feel the same full of drains and stitches, but right now I'm sure hoping I can have ps in 6 or 7 months. I figure, we've risked our lives by having wls, risked them for a better future, so why stop short if we want to put the finishing touches on our transformations. This is a very serious, personal choice, but for some of us, the shapes of our post-op bods leave a lot to be desired--health-wise, not just cosmetically. I mean, we're all a bunch of hot-looking guys, right? With or without surgery.

Hi Joe, I had abdominalplasty in 2006.  Well worth the money I paid out of pocket ($7,000).  It was painful, much more painful than the RNY, and the drains were an extreme annoyance.  But even with all that it was definitely worth it.  I stayed overnight at the hospital and left in the morning.  I spent the next week at home basically in a "v" so the healing would be accurate.  The first week there were a lot of pain meds.  The second week I was able to spend more time in a chair, but was under strict orders from my surgeon to avoid moving much.  Since you know my exercise routine this was extremely painful.  After three weeks I was back at work.  The scars took about six months to heal, but at this point they are hardly noticable. BTW, when my surgeon performed the abdominalplasty he found a double hernia.  So three months after the first surgery I had to go back under the knife for my second operation.  I was back at work two weeks after the hernia surgery and they used the same scar to go in repair the hernia. Definitely has made running and cycling and sex much easier, and entertaining.  I say go for it and enjoy your life.   One last thing, if they are just removing skin, like they did for me, don't expect to lose any weight.  I lost less than two pounds.  If you have fat removed, than you might lose more weight.
