head hunger cravings

OMG my family is having Chineese food for dinner tonight, and I'm still on the jello/pudding phase. While it may not have been my absolute single favorite food, it is probably the one food choice I could have eaten every day for the rest of my life. I don't have any grudge against what they are eating, they need to continue to eat and enjoy the things in life that they do.  My successes and failures will be my own.  It's just hard with that smell permeating the house. Nothing tastes as good as thin feels.... hmm that's a coin toss right now, because I have only ever known one half of that argument. I have another week before they progress me to some of the softer solid foods like fish and eggs.  This is going to be an interesting week.

That phrase, "nothing tastes as good as thin feels", is a good saying and may be a motivator for some people.  But, taste and being thin are two wildly different things.  You will be able to enjoy really good tasting food in the near future. I'd suggest that you just have some egg drop soup if you want to have a bit of the taste of the Chinese food.  Avoid having any of the wontons at this point.  You may be able to have them in the future or you may not.  You'll see as time goes on.  You will be able to eat some Chinese food eventually.  You'll probably start out on their version of "diet" dishes when you do start. I went with a friend to an international buffet for lunch today and had shrimp in lobster sauce plus additional mushrooms.  I know to stop when I feel full.  I don't have a problem with limiting my food at meals.  The most important thing when going to a buffet is to load up on protein and have some veggies.

Two ideas.  First, go away from the food.  Don't hang out around stuff you can't have.  Second, ask them to give you a break.  Pardon me for saying this, but "my successes and failures will be my own" is way too selfish.  Aren't your family members supporting you?  Did they help you through the hospital?  Are they rooting you on?  None of us lives in a vacuum.  We share success and failure, like it or not.  Don't be afraid to ask for help -- even if it is asking that they go to the restaurant for Chinese and leave you at home!

Anyone can do anything for one week!  Hang in there and be careful that next week's challenges don't leave you longing all the more.

I used to love chinese food.  Now when I eat it, I will throw most up within an hour or so.  My tastes changed, and my body doesnt like chinese anymore. And I dont agree with the phrase "My successes and failures will be my own"  Thats just not true.  We need support to succeed.  I couldnt have gotten as far as I have without my family. And remember, you need to control yourself and learn to be smart.  Its not hard to deal with the smell.  You HAVE TO LEARN to be in control of yourself, and not let it bother you what others around you eat.  Feeling bad for yourself is hard to get over, but it must be done.  Otherwise you are a slave to food forever.

Sounds like a great opportunity to get out and walk for an hour or so.
The free man owns himself. He can damage himself with either eating or drinking....... If he does he is certainly a damn fool, and he might possibly be a damned soul; but if he may not, he is not a free man any more than a dog.

The first few mounths are the hardest. Well they were for me any how. I missed food so much I was pretty angry about it. As time went on it got better. I had a cast iron stomach before and now I have cast iron pouch after. I can eat anything now at 3.5 years out. We have learned to make more healthy choices. Just hang in there it will get easier. Well the failure or success is going to be mine.  If I don't succeed it won't matter if people ate chocolate cake in front of me 24/7, it will have been my decisions and choices that are ultimately responsible.   Last nite was the first time since I have been home that I was confronted with that type of craving, and I'm over it today.  It's amazing how powerful the smell of food is.  It absolutely put me into a cranky feel sorry for myself mood.  But today, I know that I can and will get past it.  I'm sure there will be more experiences like that down the road, and I'll get through them too. Thanks for the words of support and encouragement.   Scott

I still have those feelings.  I think I am good with the food cravings, I am able to control those at this point, but I still get the depresed feeling and the feeling of just wanting to go lock myself in a closet and sit and do nothing.  During those times, and they are not necesarly food related, but just an overall feeling I have from time to time, I close up and everything angers me. This has annoyed me so much that I have my first therapy consult on 2/19.  I have a lot of what I could call anger or rage now and I need to get that under control ASAP. Its not easy changing your life completely in 1 day.  It takes a lot of time to adjust.  I am almost 7 months out and still adjustng. Just remember that you are not alone, and that although your family might not understand, we do, and thats why we are here. Jeez, I have gotten a ton of support here, and this place makes me feel better about myself every day.

Yup...hear you! I too love the stuff...specially the Cantonese LoMein! AND like you, I too hated to watch it get scarfed down when I had applesauce....yuck!

That said, I'm now down 190+ lbs and I do still like same, just not as much....this is thinking with my new pouch and what I can digest etc -- rather than with my head that still says GO FOR THE LOMEIN!!!!

Spring rolls? Lemon Chicken? Shrimp in Lobster Sauce? all forgotten...dont like them at all anymore....but I still do like fried rice, Szcheuan Chicken and even the occasional fortune cookie.

It's not what I used to like, but what I now like that counts for me....the WLS I figure changed more than my insides....it also changed my liking certain foods too! So forget the smell, forget the dinnerplates around you....instead look ahead at dropping inches and inches off your waistline...

Works...honest!

Jim
