Frozen Prepared Dinners

I'm nine weeks out and starting to get bored on some of the sameol sameol. I don't cook much other than grilling and don't really want to spend the time to do so. Saturday and Sunday are tougher cause I'm around the house and have access to the fridge, but I feel some of the old demons returning. My question is, what about some of these frozen dinners like weigh****chers or lean cuisine or whatever. Have any of you guys eaten this stuff? Cause I never have. Are there any that taste worth a **** Are there any that go anywhere near where we need to go as far as protein is concerned? My wife eats some but they're all linguini and lasagna and that doesn't sound like a viable option for me. I think if there are some of these that are more meat based and less starch based they would help me win the fight on portion control if I knew going in that I was gonna eat what was on that tray and nothing else. Plus it might help me choke down some greenery. Any advice would be welcomed so y'all holla.

As far as "Heat & Eats," the South Beach Diet frozen meals are usually more expensive than the other frozen dinners like Lean Cuisine, Healthy Choice and Weigh****chers, so it makes it hard to buy them when you have cheaper options less than 2 ft away, but for the most part, they tend to be worth it. For "Healthy + Fast" they are pretty good. The portions are "slightly" a bite too big for RNY’ers who have moved on to full range of foods, but just barely. For folks a year out, they are one bite too little actually. They taste good, and tend to be balanced, Meat and Veggies, with Low-Glycemic Carbs rather than a bunch of low-fat noodles like most of the Lean Cuisine stuff. If you are looking for a "Heat & Eat" to work at home, try a bag of the Tyson’s chicken Fajita strips. Throw a dab of steak sauce on half a cup and toss it in the microwave. Nuke it just till hot (it’s already fully cooked) and the chicken is really juicy and not dry. Fast, GoodEats. I actually cook a bunch, so I’m not of much help. Best Wishes- Dx

Two thoughts.  1. A small crock pot.  Don't go overboard on that one.  I would add the meat, vegies, and seasonings and eat it over a few days.  The one frozen dinner I have come to love is Healthy Choice Lemon Pepper Fish.  It has broccoli and an apple cherry dessert (which you may dump on...be careful).  The fish is on a bed of rice pilaf.  I will add some soy sauce to the fish and rice.  Good eats...Brian

You're on the right track....you've figured out that regular frozen meals are way to high in fat and calories so those are out...a lot of the healthy ones are loaded with sugar or at least more carbs then you want, so those are out...what's left are healthy ones that are meat and veggie based. The pickings are kind of slim though (no pun intended) It will just be up to your personal taste. A few that I have tried that are "worth a ****" are the South Beach Diet meals there's a beef and broccoli, a kung pao chicken, a green beans and pork...they're all decent...Weigh****chers makes a couple too - the pot roast one isn't too bad - just be careful with these  - the meat in frozen meals and canned meat for that matter too is chewier and stringier then normal and at nine weeks out they didn't work too well for me, they seemed to lead to meat getting stuck in my stoma, which isn't fun...but everyone's different so if you're allowed to, and it works, then go for it.

I eat the lean cuisine meals on occasion. I avoid any of the ones with pasta, rice or potatoes in them but a few of the ones I do eat include.....roasted garlic chicken, garlic beef & broccoli and the beef tips portabello. I find the South Beach meals to be just a little too big for my pouch.

Thanks for the info men. I'm pretty sure I'm going to be looking for ideas regarding keeping a variety in my diet while keeping it healthy for some time to come. Food boredom has always derailed diets before for me.

I've tried and enjoy all the Kashi frozen meals.   They come in a pretty good variety and they all taste suprisingly great.

My favorites are the Coconut Lemongrass Chicken and the Lime Cilantro Shrimp.

oh yeah, i live on those suckers. i just find the ones i can eat and not throw up! i go for low carb low cal stuff. some smart ones are good and i do the others too for variety. we don't cook except for once a week so this is the answer for me. the other thing is we cook a big meal on sat or sun and then i can have left overs for the rest of the week. we did a crock pot beef stew last night and i'll eat this for a week. so that's an idea too. we cook for four even though it's the two of us. the frozen **** gets old after a while so that's how i mix it up. i also try to get frozen or fresh veggies in there too....carbonblob

I agree with Dx.  The South Beach diet meals are Da Bomb.  The only Lean Quisene meal I like are any of the Pasta ones.
