How soon after surgery were you back at the Gym
Hey Guys,
Understanding the standard follow yhour doctors advice anwser. How soon were you back at the gym. Before surgery I was in the 6 days a week 45 minutes of cardio mind set and habit. It felt so good walking out after a workout. I have an all or nothing personality so the doctor made me promise I would not go back this week because he feared I would not simple be able to just walk on the treadmill. MY RNY was 1-15-08 and I am already down 20 since surgery. I can only imagine what the weight loss is going to be like once I get the body fired up and working. I see the doc on Monday and expect to be okayed to go to the gym and take it easy and no lifting for a few more weeks. I am seriously pumped about getting back at it and taking advantage of the "honeymoon"
So I want to learn from your personal experience. How soon after were you back in the gym and what did you start off doing?

The standard set of instructions from my surgeon:
Walk immediately.
No exercise / cardio / etc for six weeks.
The reason for this - they have to cut through the ab muscles do perform this surgery - especially if you have to have it open (as I did) and you need six weeks for the muscles to heal properly.
Personally - I was walking, but I think the exercise would have caused issues as far as the healing goes. I'm glad I held off.
Of course, I have enough issues otherwise that have prevented me from working out on a regular basis. That's coming to and end though - I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, and it's not a train this time.
try to wait at least two days. then you can go straight to heavy weight if you don't split open! seriously, i waited a lot longer than six weeks. i waited 4 months before i lifted seriously and even then i started on circuits for a while. i understand the ants in the pants syndrome but you could do some serious harm attacking right off.
you'll have plenty of time before the six months are up and you can take advantage for the rest of your life by the way. you will still lose years down the road once you have lost the weight. take her easy and don't hurt yourself......carbonblob

Walking immediately. The paperwork from my Dr. say no lifting for 6 weeks, but he told me that I could do arms and legs on nautilus type machines right away if I wanted to. Just no crunches or anything that put too much stress on the abdomen.

The first time you do something - It's going to be a personal record!
I also got to the walking very quickly. I was told to wait for 6 weeks for the weights. That didn't seem right when I got there so I waited another two weeks. Then I started very light with the weights. I have an incisonal hernia and I will attribute it to the lifting. Even waiting 8 weeks I did too much too soon. I would side with CB and wait longer.

I was walking right away but didn't hit the gym for 6 weeks (right after doc said everything looked good). I started with a trainer a couple of days a week and wend another day or 2 on my own. I decided on a trainer to help with working back up to the right level for me. Things have been going well and I still use the trainer. Good luck with everything. Don't try too much too soon. there's plenty of time.
