Upscale Whale Establishment

Sorry, it's in Japanese, but this whale restaurant, "Kujira Tei" (Whale Pagoda...haha!) says it all:

Many of those "experimental whales" end up only as "culinary experiments".

Someone suggested, if the Japanese insistence on eating whale as part of tradition is to hold, then hunting methods should be "traditional"! (Guys on boats with hand harpoons, little boats with single shot harpoons).

We could make it a sport. I think I'd root for the whale!

"little boats with single shot harpoons" Sounds like a new Japanese Television Gameshow. "Whale of a Time!" Now, this stuff?  Whale? really? Looks like the fried Chicken Liver special at Clara's Diner. (maybe with an accidental 'garnish' ) Add Ketchup, and it's half the dishes in Mississippi! Refresh me....Whale tastes like? Chicken? (right over half the time when answering - chicken) Best Wishes- Dx

Dx,

That's right. More fried food here than you might expect.

The garnish looks like something the whale may have combed up in his food intake system. Or maybe you mean it looks like somebody accidently dropped those things on it.

I've only had whale sashimi at a party. I figured, "Why let the poor beast go to waste?" It was purple and tasteless. I just don't get the fascination with whale. Other people have said it tastes like beef when cooked.

Best Wishes,

Dave

Hey Nick,

I agree. The "tradition" part should apply to the hunting part, not just the eating part. What fun could  it be (for them) unless the whale weighs more than the boat?

Sumo has been kept the same throughout the ages.

Tea Ceremony has been kept the same thoughout the ages.

Whale hunting should be kept the same, too!

Do they really have those live octopus (or squid) restaurants in Japan too?   I forgot where I saw the video but the octopi (or squid) were still alive when you ate them and you had to be careful to eat them a certain way or their tentacles could get lodged in your throat and choke you.

Hello Kyp,

I've eaten live fish, but not live octos or squid. I'm sure they must have them somewhere. Raw? Always. Living ones have to be around, but I haven't seen them.

That's right, don't want anything latching on to your uvula or anything else!

This makes me even more grateful for my European heritage and our gustatory relationship with cattle and hogs.
The free man owns himself. He can damage himself with either eating or drinking....... If he does he is certainly a damn fool, and he might possibly be a damned soul; but if he may not, he is not a free man any more than a dog.
