I've read about this a lot over the past couple years. My wife is having the surgery tomorrow (I had mine in 2006), and she has type 2 Diabetes.  So we're very excited about this. In fact - another article on MSNBC: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22787261/

This is an article that is on fire through out the news network. It is concentrating on the Lap Band with the study out of Australia. The Lap Band results out of Australia by this one doctor, has not been replicated anywhere else. A recent study out of Europe published in August was not as complimentary of the Lap Band - the results were quite poor. The poor results reported from Europe, Australia and the USA, have some doctors shifting away from the Lap Band. HOWEVER!--- The Lap Band, the RNY, the sleeve and the BPD & BPD/DS are all excellent operations. When they are used as a tool, in conjunction with good nutrition and progressive aerobic exercise, the results can be & are amazing as all of you here have proved. It is the opinion of WLS surgeons and endocrinologists physicians around the world, that WLS surgery is a cure for things like diabetes, reflux, sleep apnea. It can improve high blood pressure, high cholesterol and arthritis. SOme people have suggested it improves asthma. Many men say that they can fuel their rocket for lift-off after WLS surgery. One specific type of WLS is not for everyone. The best decision for which WLS is best for whom, is made by the patient and their surgeon. WLS surgery works. Spread the word.

Good luck to you and good health.

The doctors at Duke in their WLS sessions go over the stats on how many diseases that are cured or greatly improved because of WLS. Last night's group session at Duke talked about how much pain levels and arthritis are improved for people that lose weight from WLS. It really is a miracle cure for many things that nothing else seems to help. I know I had high blood pressure, very bad sleep apnea, high cholesterol, GRD, bad back and knee pain, occasional male impotence, low self esteem, a crappy sex life, shortness of breath, living on Motrin and Celebrex and a few things that I don't remember. Now fast forward 19 month and minus 240lbs for me. All of these issues are gone...not just better but long gone..... I feel like I did when I was in my 20s and I am 49.  I hiked 17 miles with a 25lb pack on my back over fairly rugged terrain two weeks ago. I now have a life worth living again so WLS is a miracle cure in my book.

Tim,

I think I'll have to be healthy and live forever, just to have enough time to get my life straightened out!
