Annoyed by the fat guy on the tread mill in front of me

I got annoyed today at the gym. I was busting my butt going faster for longer than I ever have. And I look in front of me and the "fat" guy in front of me who was walking as opposed to my slow jog had burned more calories than I had in less time. I guess that is one of the downsides of dropping a few pounds according to the treadmill I burn less calories at 276 than I did at 405.... Just joking about the fat comment at 276 I know that I am stil fat. no unrealistic body image here. I suppose that the "fat" guy has a lot more weight to lose than you do.  You may have both lost about the same percentage of body weight during your workouts.  Yeah, a heavier person, just by reason of simple laws of physics, is going to burn more calories per hour if they are both going the same speed.  It's 2:22am and I can't really think of how that works if they both do the same distance regardless of speed. I knew when I started my WLS journey that my goal weight due to the surgery would be about what many of you have as your starting weight.  I started around 570 and now weigh 365.  You don't know where the "fat" guy started on his current weight loss or physical training program.  Since you do see him at the gym, you may want to talk to him sometime about WLS and your own experiences.  Just don't push your views on him.  Invite him to look at our forum. Oh, keep going to the gym despite minor disappointments.

i run with my pedometer and after 2.5 miles it says i've only burned 180 calories! crap. the up side is that when you replace your fat with muscle it will burn more calories at idle. your friend can't say that......carbonblob

Thanks for this post - it put something into perspective for me. I used to get really pissed at the fat guy in front of me on the treadmill.  He was always out of breath and sweating profusely.  But the fat SOB would be there every time I was on the treadmill...I hated that guy, even when he starting losing a sh*tload of weight and went from a walk to a jog while increasing his time and incline.  Now I like that guy - the fat  guy - and as a matter of fact he's doing okay now, is in good shape and has lost all his weight.  This is precisely why right after my surgery I put a mirror in front of the treadmill in the basement of my house.  I wanted to see that fat guy I hated so much.  He made me work harder because I was sick of seeing him, he was killing me.  I was the fat guy. Just remember gents - it doesn't matter what shape someone is in or how overweight they may be.  What matters is that they are there at the gym busting their ass as best they know how to improve themselves. Here endeth the lesson... Cards Fan loseSMART!  loseSTRONG!
