What makes this feel more "risky"?
I'm a 54 year old grandad and I'm still in the process of getting approval from BC/BS. I can't wait to have WLS so I can start my "new" life and be active again. It will be worth it to be able to fully enjoy life again and not just exist.
I've had 4 major surgeries on my right shoulder due to an on old high school football injury that was worsened by weight training. I also had an operation to rebuild a shattered finger, appendectomy, a pacemaker implanted, a stent put in my heart and 3 heart caths.
So-o-o-o-o, why do I have more concern and apprehension about something going wrong with this surgery or post-surgery than with all the others? Am I just being a big wuss or is this common?
Bob,
I've not had all the other surgeries you have, so I can't speak to that, but I think being worried about this kind of surgery is common. In my case, part of it was probably normal, intelligent concern about any major surgery. But part of it--I think--was that by the time I needed wls I had lost hope of having a more or less "normal" life, life without being self-conscious, tired, always on the alert re my size. So maybe part of our anxieties are due to the fear-hope that this time we'll hit the jackpot, this time, we have a chance of succeeding.
And we do have that chance. You are at a great time in your life to truly enjoy the benefits of weight oss surgery. Accept your nervousness as a healthy, normal part of the process and part of the price of a better future. It's bargain price!
Good luck.
Doug

Hiya Bob. Apprehension and being scared is normal. That just says you are HUMAN! If you weren't nervous and didn't have reservations about this then you probably shouldn't do it. Hell I experienced absolute, debilitating fear the day of surgery right before they took me back. I'd never had any surgeries before and I just knew that I was gonna die on the operating table. Well I made it through and have had a little bit of success with it. :)
Hey Chad! Hearing you say that you also experienced the apprehension prior to surgery makes me feel "better". Ain't that weird? I guess it's just reassuring to know I'm not the only one who having this "can't wait - but it's scarey" feeling about the surgery. If I can be as successful as you, Doug and Paul then it will definitely be worth it!! Thanks for the reply buddy!
