Carbonated Drinks, How soon were you allowed to have them?
I don't know that my doctor has addressed this issue with me. He seems to be pretty much a "whatever you can tolerate, but everything in moderation" type anyway. But my deal is that I was a 2+ liter a day Coke addict for 20 years, which is a huge proportion of the reason I went from 250ish to 450ish in those twenty years. Coca-Cola is my line in the sand. And if I can't have a coke, I don't know that I'm interested in any of the rest of it. I'm probably going to resume my casual relationship with Crown at some point in the future. I don't know yet what I'm going to mix it with.
The free man owns himself. He can damage himself with either eating or drinking....... If he does he is certainly a damn fool, and he might possibly be a damned soul; but if he may not, he is not a free man any more than a dog.
My Doctor said , not until I was down to my goal. And even then it wasnt really a good idea. So I have my diet doctor peper once a week. But I open it a few days ahead and let the carbination out so it is flat when I drink it. It isnt the same but I quess my brain gets some satisfaction out of it. It keeps me from craving one and then just slamming one down that is carbinated at a week moment.
Paul, your answer was far superior to mine. I was thinking it, but did not have the guts to say it. I feel I am too early post-op to take exception with someone else and their questions. I think I try to be supportive, but don't want to come off as "all that". Thanks for telling it like it should be.

Just to clarify a point, I'm NOT contemplating cheating on this one. I don't even have anything carbonated in the house, and I'm not going out to buy any. This question was asked more in the spirit of intellectual curiosity. I just find the wide diversity of opinions in both the medical and lay communities about many aspects of weight loss surgery really interesting.
Sort of the same thing happened to my sister. She has really bad Rheumatoid arthritis, and has had quite a few joint replacements already. She was trying to decide between fusion surgery on her ankle and an artificial ankle joint. She had doctors tell her everything from how great the artificial joint would be for her to "well, you might as well just have your foot amputated, it's that bad."
As already stated you should adhere to what your doc says. In my case my surgeon said diet sodas were fine after 6 weeks if I could tolerate them. I tried them at the 6 week mark and had no problem at all. I usually drink one Diet Pepsi or Coke Zero a day. However I know people who feel some real discomfort when they drink them. Once again follow your docs advice though.
