Carbonated Drinks, How soon were you allowed to have them?

I know different doctors have different theories.  How soon after your RNY were you allowed to have carbonated drinks? For me, at 4 weeks out, food looks, by and large, "yuck" and I struggle to get in three meals a day and 90 grams of protein, don't even drink very much anymore, hard to get in my 64 ounces of fluids. The ONLY craving I've had is for a pepsi or a mountain dew, not regular, diet would be fine, and I usually drink only caffeine free and don't do coffee or tea, so it's not a caffeine craving, I just miss the carbonation, the fizz and bubbles.  I would also be very happy to just have some club soda to mix into crystal light or juice -- it all seems too boring without that fizz. My program recommends no carbonated drinks for six months -- it's going to be a LONG five more months.  Just wondered what other programs recommend, and what some of your experiences were?

I lost the taste for them and haven't had one since my surgery.

My doc has a "No Carbonation for first 21 weeks." Even after that, they say it is best to go without… I probably didn’t try one (and I made sure it was partially flat) Until nearly one year out… Funny thing, Once I did have my Diet Coke? It didn’t taste nearly as good as I remembered…. In fact, I remember my reaction being- "This tastes like there's something 'wrong' with it." Like water, that had been polutted with a foreign substance... I couldn’t understand how I have consumed over a 6-pack a day of these things for all those years! Any carbonation gave me the burps and farts and made me feel bloated. I completely "lost my taste" for them. Around 3 ½ years post-op, I found that "Sugar-Free RockStar" has very little carbonation And over ice, actually tastes OK. I have about 3 or 4 a week….. I have gone back and tried my old friend Diet Coke…Still a no go. Funny how stuff that I liked prior to surgery, has never tasted the same since, And other foods/flavors, have suddenly become my "Go To" foods/flavors… As for a carbonated drink? It seems Mankind did fine without it from approx. 130,000 BC till the early 1800’s. Nearly 132,000 years, and never even missed it for a moment. Surely 6 months won’t be to long a wait…..0

Best Wishes- Dx

I am never allowed to have them.  They are on the "S" list.

what anyone else's surgeon recommends they do or not do has absolutely nothing to do with if you are justified to not comply with what YOUR surgeon recommends YOU do. DEAD ON!

as usual, paul is right on the money. do whatever your doc says, not someone elses. your doc sees his results daily. my doc can pinpoint almost every problem i get by his experience. he told me you can stretch the pouch and also the thing about going off the track once you start these drinks. like some of the others i drank tons of diet coke. never touched a carb drink again and don't miss it one bit. i hate water but learned to accept it. work paul's advice and try to think more of life changes and sticking to it. i know it's hard. believe me. try to forget all the past habits and really try to embrace all the new ones your doc and his staff are trying to teach you. my eyes would glaze over everytime someone mentioned label reading or nutrition topics. now i'm a label reader big time. i just learned to adapt.

you're going to find all kinds of tricks and new foods to make the change. try all the new stuff and forget going backwards. a journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step (and that step is forward). good luck and hey, we're not ganging up on you, just telling you what we learned the hard way! carbonblob

I was never told they are banned completely, or even a bad idea for a certain time period. Apart from an occasional sip of my wife's Pepsi, I don't touch them. In a restaurant, I ge****er, as well as at home. *IF* you're going to indulge, make sure your post-op swelling is gone, or you'll have the most exquisite gas pains known to man. Stick to diet soda or carbonated water, too.

Paul is correct about your surgeon. If I loved alcohol like I loved Cokes I would have been an Alcoholic. I haven't drank one in nearly nine months. Kind of like Ice Cream I have it in the freezer but I might have a table spoon once a month. Good Luck
