"Family" V-Day Cards???

Last night  I was shopping at Target when I walked by the Valentine's Day card section ...  

  I glanced over at the cards as I passed, expecting to see the usual "to my sweetheart" and such niceties, but was greeted instead by the spectacle of cards from almost any family relation you can think of to another ..  "To My Son" (from mother) ..   "To My Daughter" (from father) ..    There was one "To My Brother" and even one to be sent by a father to "his son & girlfriend" ..   < CLUNK >

   Call me old-fashioned, but when I was growing up, VD was for b/fs and g/fs, spouses or sometimes young classmates (remember the Vday card exchange?) .. 

   WTF is up with these "Deliverance" VD cards???

To the greeting card companies, they are just a way of staying in touch that they promote so they can make a bigger profit.  Ain't that what life's about in the good ol' USA.  It's been this way with the cards for about 20-30 years.

ah, what a fond memory i just flashed on. exchanging cards when in class. plus remember those heart candies with little sayings on them? they got passed out too. i recall we had to give everyone a card, even the dorks! thank god or i would never had received one.....lol. it was that one time a year you could approach that little red head girl!

  yep  and if she was a "beefy" gal, you could get away with giving her the card with the little hippo gal on it!   &:-x)

when i was a kid i alternated between thin and fat. fat mostly after about fourth grade. it was horrible. in class we were reading i think lord of the flies and then the teacher had the class vote on who we would want to eat. you guessed it. talk about scarred. i obviously still remember the hurt. i was that hippo. i didn't lose the weight again until i was half way through high school. about 20 years ago i gained it back and started the whole cycle again. hippo. i hate it when that happens! carbonblob

Your teacher had the class vote on which classmate they'd like to eat? Geez, what an ass!  Or more likely (in 4th grade), 'stupid bee-atch'! 

Back in the day the teachers weren't as PC as they are now. I remember being sent to the PE teacher to have a "swat" (corporal punishment) adminstered.  He made me wait till he finished his smoke, and then made me drop trou so he could whack my bare ass with big wooden canoe paddle.  The paddle even had holes drilled in it to make it move faster through the air, and inflict the most pain. As unthinkable as that would be, nowadays, I can tell you that it sure got my attention.

Understood.  But 'back in the day' or not, this was - as Lee said - sadistic.  Or profoundly stupid. Or both, which is even more dangerous. 

yeah, i agree. what an asshole. a real stupid move. funny, i do remember this happening recently and i jumped when i heard it. this time it made news and i think the kids parents were suing the school or something. it was almost the same cir****tances and they voted the overweight kid the one to eat. i think it was a survivor scenerio or something as that was a hot topic when that show came out. a really insensitive thing to do now or today. i don't think i told my parents as i was ashamed. i know i was a problem kid because of my weight and now wonder if she didn't plan something like that to get even for my bad behavior knowing i would teased about it.

didn't we just read a post from some women who came in here about something similar. being pointed out in the crowd for being heavy and teased about it when she was a kid in school? just remember a post here or somewhere about that. seems we're easy targets when kids due to the helpnessness and shame. i have to say now if someone called me a fat ass in my adult days they would be picking up teeth. i get really angry when i hear people being teased or called names for being overweight. old habits die hard.....carbonblob

 omg ..  I guess now we can start comparing "school time discipline horror stories" ..  ???     I remember back in grade school we had a sadistic old principal ..   For punishment he would sometimes lock a disobedient student in the school's walk-in safe in his office ..   One Friday afternoon one of the students did not come home aftter school  ..  The parents freaked out and so did school officials when they were contacted, as no one had any idea what happened to him ..    The following Monday a.m. the school's secretary went into the office and opened the safe for the day .. you got it ..  there was the missing kid!   < CLUNK >   Fortunately there was enough air in there that the kid was unharmed ..  Turns out the principal had forgotten to let the kid out of the safe at the end of the school day and gone home  ..       These days that would have been lawsuit city!   &8- O)
