OK I know this has been done over and over but I still don't seem to get it.  I want to do a liquid diet just to do it.  I'm probably 2 months away from surgury and just want to do it to see how bad it will be and try to drop of weight for the surgury also. Someone had a formula that was like if I wanted to weigh 200 lbs (if that was my goal) then I should have 200 gr of protien a day.   Another guy poster on teh VSG board that he drank 3 or 4 slim fasts a day and some plain carrots and celery for his liquid diet. So what should I try.  I know it will be really really tough for me to just have liquids for a week (almost impossible for me) but I need to practice so that I can do it when the time comes. Just give me your suggestions but I do want to get the protien right. Thanks.

Jack, Now this is just my .02 but I would hold off on that until you are told to do so by your Dr. For me that was a long 2 weeks and I got through it because I had the end in site (a surgery date). If you try it and fail, you may set yourself up for future difficulties when you really have to do it. I think a better plan would be to train yourself to eat smaller portions of the correct types of foods. Avoid things made with white sugar and white flour. Also establish a daily exercise routine. These things are enough at this point I should think. Do aeroibic workouts to get your wind built up and do some strength training to get your body in better shape for the surgery. All these things will make your transition into the thin world easier and are things that must be done for the rest of your skinny life. The liquid diet is a transitionary thing and I wouldn't get too hung up on it.  But lets see what the other guys say.... Doug

I agree. I truly had no problem with the liquid diet because I already established a surgery date. Start exerciseing and begin cutting back a little at a time. In the three weeks prior to surgery I drank protien breakfast lunch and ate a small evening meal and went from 346 to 313 in three weeks. It really made me second quess the surgery, because again i never had a problem loosing great amounts of weight, I just couldn't keep it off again. Good Luck to you!

Jack, My date is 2-5-08 and I am required to do a one week high protein, low sugar  liquid prior to surgery.  I actually started yesterday (2 weeks early) to jumpstart my weightloss and help me mentally prepare for the pre and post op regimen.  (I fully anticipate a last meal within these 3 weeks, but it will only truly be "one last meal").  I've dieted over the years using this scheme and it does seem to be sustainable for a 2-3 weeks without cheating.  As long as you stay over 30-40  g of carbs, you don't kick into ketosis like an Atkins diet. So, what I am doing is this: Breakfast Protein drink  with 1/2 cup juice- 50 g Pro, 30 grams carbs  320 cal Morning snack               - 1 new whey bullet protein  42 grams Pro 175 cal Lunch   Protein drink    50 g Pro, 6 grams carb  240 cal Dinner  Protein drink    50 g Pro, 6 g carb            240 cal. I'm using Beverly Whey for these drinks as I found it is the thickest mix and makes you feel quite full. I should probably sneak in an afternoon snack but so far no headaches.  So, I'm under a 1000 cals, drinking LOTS of water, and feel good.  They glycogen will probably run out sometime tonight and I'll attack the fridge around 9:00 PM............ Oh yeah, I've been doing some cardio and weight work in the evenings but that will drop off without the carb energy.  And I weigh ~320 and if I tried to eat that many grams of Protein, my liver would revolt.  Staying around 200 g/day is way more than your body needs to retain muscle.  Anything more than that is just extra calories Good Luck

Thanks for the info, exactly what i was looking for.  Yeah I will probably start to do the same but then go off it since I don't have my surgury date yet.  Once I do I hope to do like you, 2-3 weeks of the liquid diet and just suffer, but get thru it and the surgury. I may add some raw veges, like cucumbers, broccoli, etc just as a filler.   I've been walking my ass off at night, between 3-5 miles each night.  But I'd like to drop some weight fast with the liquid idet.  I'll give it a shot. Thanks.

The Protein Shake I take is called MUSCLE MILK. And it is the best one I have tasted.  And I have tried MANY!

Jack, If you do decide to do the liquid diet, keep a couple of things in mind: 1)  Make sure you get enough protein, as stated above. 2)  Keep in mind that the "suffering" feeling of food deprivation is fairly temporary, and diminishes after a week or so, as your body adjusts to its new regimen. 3)  If you are doing a full-liquid diet for personal reasons, and not because you have to for surgery, you can still have some soild foods, an you should be sure to eat some carrots, celery, an apple or two, and/or a fiber biscuit (look near the laxatives at the pharmacy) every day.  One of the many things I tried prior to weight loss surgery was a weight loss program at a local hospital which used a liquid protein shake diet.  The Dr. which ran it told me the most common side effect of an all-liquid diet, ironically, was severe constipation, and she was right.  The fiber biscuits helped a lot, but of course, I eventually gained back all of the weight I lost, and then some. 4)  Be sure to drink a lot of pure water in addition to your protein shakes, etc.
