I have been and am continuing to apply for jobs in Wash DC for government jobs.  If anyone out there works for the US Govt and has had WLS can you tell me which healthcare plans are best for WLS.  I'm hoping I can find one that will just approve me and no 6 month records with a nutritionist or Dr.  I just want to get the job, get approved and get this done.  Otherwise I'm paying for it myself. Thanks.

There are several plans that will pay for it.  I had Aetna when I had mine, but I now have Amerihealth and know that they pay for it also.  You will have to compare plans to go over deductions and co-pays to determine which plan is best for you.  Almost all plans now do require pre surgery counseling and that you follow a supervised diet for 5-6 months.  I don't know how it is now, but when I had my surgery, I only needed to have my doctor send in proof that I had been on such a diet within a set period of time.  I didn't need to go on one immediately prior to surgery. Don't be rash in your rush for the surgery.  You are much better off if you can get a health ins company to pay for the surgery rather than going to the expense of paying for it yourself.  If you run into complications as a result of the surgery and you are self-pay, most insurance plans will not pay for those expenses.  But, if they cover you, all post-op care will be covered.  Yes, you will pay something, but you won't be out the thousands of dollars you'd be paying otherwise.

I have the FED plan MDIPA hmo in the DC area. They only currently allow rny or lapband. The surgery will cost me $30 per office visit, and $150 per day for 3 days in patient. The max inpatient fee is $450. My doctor just submitted my pre authorization, they say approval is pretty cut and dry. You need 6 months pcp or nutritionist diet, with at least one office visit a month. BMI of 35 with co morbidities or 40 BMI. Hope this helps.
