I still can't quite wrap my head around it but...I'm approved!  I called the insurance company this morning and the rep said that she had me listed as approved for surgery.  I asked her if they were going to send a letter to me (I like to have words on paper for stuff like this), but she said the only send out letters for denials.  I told her I really didn't need a letter after all .   Thanks everyone for the limitless information that I have found here

I felt the same way when they called me last June, just a verbal over the phone approval, you only get something on paper if it's a denial.  I think the total time between my initial consultation and the time I got the call about insurance approval was 10 or 11 days.  My insurance company required a psychological consult, which I had three days after my consult with the bariatric surgeon, and a letter from my PCP documenting at least one years worth of failed diet attempts, which for me was no issue -- I've tried everything under the sun over the years but surgery, from medically supervised programs to weigh****chers 7 or 8 times to psychotherapy.   I had read some of the horror stories online about people who fought for months or even years to get approval, and the way mine came through so fast left me feeling a little guilty and also apprehensive that it was too easy.  I still feel really bad for people who can't get approval, or for those who obviously really could benefit from the surgery, but whose insurance companies throw every possible obsticle in their way. I called and double checked with the insurance company a couple of weeks ago.  All systems are go, and the customer rep I checked with was very nice and seemed really positive.  I think because the company is a non-profit, that helps a lot to get approvals.  My sister, who has really severe rheumatoid arthritis and who has had at least half a million dolllars worth of joint replacement surgeries, plus uses about $3000 a month worth of prescription drugs, all paid for by the same insurance company, has developed sort of a raport with the people who handle her case, and she feels that they really are motivated by getting the most medical care in the most cost effective way for the most people.  I personally haven't had any complaints about my coverage overall, although I wish I could get into a pool that provides prescription coverage, but I cannot because I self-pay and am not covered through a large employer group.
