... so I can toss darts at it? grrrrrrr
I don't know about ya'll, but I'm SO sick of his "fat jokes" on the Tonight Show .. For a while it seemed he felt the need to crack at least one per show (fat people, our fat kids, etc. - he even made fun of "Dr. Piil" to his face re: his book on weight loss) .. You'd think he'd be a little more sensitive, if not P.C., given the number of obese Americans .. (maybe they don't have that problem in CA/L.A., though .. hmmmm) .. I'm not a violent person, but at one point when I was a pre-op II swore I would belt him right in his ample jaw for all of us if I ever ran into him in person .. &8-(
but then I realized. on recent reflection - is this Leno's way (i.e. comedy) of trying to get peoples' eyes opened to the obesity epidemic in our country, or is he just out for quick easy laughs (or maybe he's insecure about his own potential for ballooning in size)? His motives seemed even more ambiguous last night when he made a joke about WLS becoming so much more prevalent in the U.S. of late (he pointed out a stat that the number of surgeries had quadrupled in the recent past, or some such) what gives, Jay???
well, you know jay loves cars. i used to have an exotic car dealership in burbank right near his studio where he tapes the show. he would come over all time. now i'm not trying to impress or drop names but we got to know each other to the point i had his cell phone number. in all the time i knew him he was the most sincere celebrity you would want to meet. he really likes people and i don't think he has a mean bone in his body. i think the fat jokes are popular and that's all. i even bet if you talked to him face to face he would drop the fat jokes. so write the show and ask. i bet if he has anything to do with it he would drop the jokes.
now for something similar. we have a local activist group and we are trying to reclaim some canyon areas for our use. a big company is trying to fence off land we've been using as a park for over 60 years. anyway the head of this group is a really nice lady and we've been talking and emailing the group of hundreds over the past month. so we finally got a meeting with this company. she posted the minutes only because we were limited to bringing six people to the meeting. so she's conveying the meeting in an email to everyone and describes one of the vp's as a little fat guy! well, i'm pissed at this guy too but it really hit home when she said that. as with most of here, once you lose your weight and you meet people who don't know your history, they never think you had a weight problem and use these words all the time. and even then, they think you of all people won't be offended because you've lost the weight. i'll tell you, i felt sorry and ashamed. i felt bad that this guy might read the email and see himself described like that. me, i would have described him as an asshole but not fat. come on, we can't go there. but here i had all this respect for this lady and then that jewel comes out. not only that but hundreds are reading this too. so i'm torn. it just confirms prejudices and one that i'm all to familiar with. just sounding off. don't really know what to think of it all. i feel bad i'm just keeping my head down and not saying something like, let's not call him fat in the future. nobody would understand me. let's face it, i'm a jerk too......carbonblob

I agree that if a good hearted celebrity knew that his words and comments were seriously hurtful to the nameless/faceless people out there (as opposed to cheap shots at other celebrities) they would check themselves. I wonder how much control they have over the material. I think the staff writers are responsible for more of the content than the host himself. just my $.02.
