It's time for me to lose more weight

I watched Oprah the other day because Bob Greene was a guest and they were discussing the Best Life Diet.  I've had it with diets and I've had RNY but I'm stuck at 364.  Oprah had several people on who had lost large amounts of weight through lifestyle changes. I've talked about how I'm a carboholic.  I've basically accepted that but I'd given up hope of giving up the carbs.  However, everyone on the show was talking about going beyond the food when losing weight.  I've been to overeaters' anonymous, had addiction counseling for my food addiction, and even tried hypnosis.  Like I said, I had given up hope.  But, when I heard the testimonies on her show, I began to have hope again. I'm bi-polar and I receive an occupational disability from the Federal Civil Service due to that condition.  I haven't worked since 07-02-92.  I was a claims rep for a federal agency but I couldn't manage my caseload anymore.  My regional director gave me the choice of filing for disability or being fired.  Duh! Well, I've been content to just sit at home and do nothing.  After hearing the testimonies on the show, I realized that I was imprisoning myself and that the world wasn't going to change to revolve around me.  I also remembered that I was more active when I first retired. So, now I start out with small steps.  The first one that was suggested is to not eat 3 hours before bedtime.  I can do that.  It will be hard, but Bob Greene said that the first year on this program is going to be hard.  I'm finally starting to keep a food and exercise journal.  Just about every lifestyle change program suggests it but I've resisted it in the past.  Not having almost constant carbo snacks is going to be very hard at first, but I have done it for months on end in the past.   So, I'll probably be checking in more often.  I need your support.  I realized early this morning at 3:00am that I might even go to the Main Forum in the middle of the night when there isn't much action here.  Sometimes just writing things down is helpful even if I don't get a response (if I can contact someone at 3:00am, maybe I won't snack).

Hi Bob (and Nick!),

I was going to say "I wake up at 3:00 a.m. sometimes!", but 3:00 a.m. east coast time would be 1:00 p.m. here. Right in the middle of my work day.

You mentioned the carb problem. I wonder if there are enough good "imitation" carb products out there to keep you satiated? Protein cookies, sugar alcohol snacks, protein bread and so forth? Have the supermarkets gotten that advanced yet?

Best Wishes,

Dave

Christmas comes and goes pretty quick here, Nick. People only talk about it for a couple of days. Not many people have a tree. Some exchange presents. They have something called a Christmas cake though. It's about 20-30 bucks. I guess it's like a birthday cake, just a celebration piece. At one time it was a big business, not sure about now, though. Where on Earth did that custom come from. Maybe there's some country in Europe that has Christmas cakes, don't know. Or- maybe they sort of copied our fruitcakes, but said, "hey...those taste pretty funky...Let's change to a different type of cake!

No low carb stuff here, though. People love rice. Rice is a big part of being Japanese. I wouldn't expect the low carb craze to catch one here anytime soon.

Wish we had more of that stuff here. I've got no attachment to rice, whatsoever!

You know Valgroce on the DS forum has a recipe for  "magic" peanut butter cookies on her profile ....it's something like peanut butter, some type of sugar substitue, and eggs...I remember looking at it...but since i can't stand sugar substitues...i decided not to make it.  All in all i think the recipe would have cost under 6 or 7 dollars for a big batch....which is a bargin considering low carb products are about 5 times the price of regular products. I remember reading that people that suffer from depression do not usually get the best results possible from WLS.   With that said, and assuming that your condition is now under control with meds.... at over 300 lbs, you might want to consider a revision....either a RNY to RNY or a RNY to DS.  Perhaps a bit more surgical internvention would be helpful. I had my original RNY on 11-16-00 and a revision on 01-21-05 due to a staple line disruption.  I weighed 426 at that time and only got down to 386 due to that surgery.  I was depressed at the time, but my shrink didn't want to change my meds so soon after surgery.  I lost 20 pounds this year due to exercise.   I doubt any doctor nor my ins would approve me for further surgery.  I'm still hopeful that I can follow this program if I'm willing to work at it and continue taking small steps towards my success. I thank all of you for responding to my post.
