The myth of no straws?

So after my surgery, in my little book, they said not to drink from a straw anymore. I can only assume it is because most people swallow a lot of air when they use a straw. However I think I have found I am not your average bear. I get a large amount of air when I drink without a straw, and far far less when I drink with one. What is up with that? My wife says when I drink I basically suck the liquid in, and that I dont drink like most people. So maybe that is the reason. I also find when I use a straw, that I bite it flat, take small sips and really only use the straw to draw the liquid into my mouth, were it is deaired before I swallow. Seriously there is far less discomfort when I do this. I know this is all probably way to much info, but does anyone else have a similar situation? Am I missing the reason they dont want us using straws? Troy

Sucking through a straw also creates a negative pressure in your stomach. Some think this could be a possible problem with NEW WLS patients before things are sealed up...or so I've heard. I'm not a physicist or anything.

Some docs do, some don’t. If memory serves me…. The "No Straws thang" is a hold-over From old school (esophageal/Stomach surgeries prior to WLS techniques.) It had more to do with the speed of consuming liquid early on Than the "Swallowed air" business. Most (or at least the majority of Bariatric surgeons) Have their patients start with ice-chips only, Then move to very small sips now a days. The straw use tends to let or encourage the new patient to suck down more with out really realizing the amount. Saw a great article (doctor online chat) about it 2 to 3 years ago… Can’t find it copied on my hard drive But it may have been on another computer. If I think to look when I’m back at my studio I’ll pass it on if I find it…… Best Wishes- Dx

I think you hit that right when called it a "myth".

I think the only exception is eating a Menthos then drinking a diet coke through the straw.   :)

I guess the "proper" way to drink liquids to minimize air or gas intake is to open the mouth and slowly POUR it in, rather than suck it up through straws or holes in cans ..   that would look so odd  and kinda effeminate though in public ..  !   &%-/    (dang that all kinda sounded sexual ..   )
