Anyone else have this issue after surgery

I am having a real problem with eating since my surgery. I am aprox. 11 weeks out from my RNY and still having issues keeping things down. When I take my first bite of anything I seem to start belching and not long after a few more bites I am in the bathroom bringing it up.  At first I thought it was just the new foods I was trying but even the simplest foods are affecting me that way. Based on the amount of food I can get down I am still only able to handle two ounces. The doctor perscribed an anacid but I am not sure that is helping.  Can anyone tell me if this issue is common and what can be done to prevent it?

Hey Roland... Ok I have a question....when you just do fluids...do they go down....? If the fluids go down, and you are able to stay hydrated... 2 ounces sounds about right to me....if you are able to keep down fluids... remember....chew chew chew chew...then CHEW CHEW CHEW til it is mush...then swallow slowly...ity bity tee ninsey bites.... so how much you down??? sounds like the tool is working...but it does take some getting used to.. chat back Russ

Not sure Roland, Whacha eatin’? If your pouch is kicking back re-fried beans or oatmeal, That’s very different than if your ‘simple foods’ are a dense protein like chicken or tuna. Is the “Gak-Up” mostly spit or ‘mucus-ish?” That sound like you are either plugging your stoma by not chewing well enough, Or swallowing too large of bites at a time. If this is happening on even mushy/pureed foods Then you need to get the doc on the phone, schedule to have your pouch “scoped” and see if you need your stoma dilated. You may be developing a stricture. *Stricture-- Generally used in bariatric surgery to refer to a narrowing of the stoma. Stricture can also refer to a narrowing anywhere along the intestine. These generally occur weeks to months after the operation and may need to be dilated back to the optimal size using endoscopic procedure. (a balloon sort of affair like an angioplasty for the pouch) That happens to some.  A handful of guys here on the board in fact. Also, most tend to have a few days of “fussiness” from their pouch After irritating it with something. If you Up-Chuck one day, Give it a rest and drop back to full liquids and/or really mushy stuff for a few days to let the irritation subside. Do stay on your doc with it however. If is a developing stricture, it will just get worse until Liquids aren’t passing easily. Hope you get this working for you soon. Best Wishes- Dx

I had the same problem eating anything high in carbohydrates.  potatoes, white bread, rice etc...  I would get the hic-ups, which would progressively get worse, and my saliva glands were producing a huge amount of saliva, and the only way to relieve it was to thro-up.  It has eased up the last few weeks, and doesn't happen so much any more.

Hope this helps.
