I had surgery on November 8th and I am doing good. I have for about a 2 weeks now have a terrible taste in my mouth. Sometimes it seems like sheet metal in my mouth. I brush my teeth, take Listerine and it goes away for a while yet it still remains. It is bad.  I am drinking alot of water. Eating protein. Anyone experience this and can anyone explain their idea of what is going on? Thanks in advance Mark

My experience is that it comes from something called Ketosis. Four weeks out myself and I find that I am brushing my teeth four and five times a day just to get that fresh mouth feeling.

Hope that helps,

Troy

Mark, Very common... Early out from surgery, the situation you describe Tends to be leftover effect of anesthisia. But over 3 weeks?  Probably simple Ketosis.

When your body metabolizes fat,

It gets sugar and ketones.

Sugar is used to fuel your body

And the ketones come out in your urine.

That's right, you will pee out your weight. Ketones are yellow and they smell TERRIBLE. Your urine will be a more intense color and it will

Have a stronger odor.

BE HAPPY; your body is losing weight by burning FAT. Your breath will smell, and bad taste in the mouth,

As ketones come out the saliva and in your sweat, too.

Maybe just carry (sugar free) breath mints

And use extra deodorant. And then enjoy the weight loss. Once you get further out in your weightloss And are eating more balanced diet with more than 20gms of Carbs a day, Your system will fall out of ketosis and that bad taste will just be a memory. Like everything else, It does get easier/better each week/month. Best Wishes- Dx

As everyone I'm sure has said by now, it is very likely normal ketosis ..   However, one thing for future reference (everyone):   if this should crop up in the future and it is not attributable to diet, be aware that a strong metallic "taste" in the mouth can also be a symptom of a developing anyeurism in the chest cavity ... !
