I had (still have) my own reservations about the surgery.  I have found that information is the key.  By checking out this site and learning the pros and cons he will be able to make an informed decidion.  I am in Ceres and working through this with the support of my wife.  I think the other post is great advice, have him set up an account.  I haven't been here long myself but feel there is a real feeling of acceptance and everyone here is ready, willing and eager to put their 2 pesos in.  Feel free to have him contact me in email if he has anything specific he is thinking about.

If he’s ‘thought about it for some time,’ What’s keeping him from contacting a doc to get a recommendation? Men tend to ignore and ‘put-off’ the health risks of Obesity Until Health is significantly threatened. Men make up only about 19% of the people who seek WLS But tend to reap the most health benefits from it. Men tend to lose faster to their goal weights And have less mal-nutrition vitamin/mineral deficiency issues than women. Have him drop by and read some of the stuff from the guys here. Could be that since most message boards and support groups are female dominated He has connected WLS as a “Gal-Thing.” A typical but inaccurate belief. Hope all works out for him no matter what coarse of action he pursues. Best Wishes- Dx

I'd say have him read this site himself...and do not limit him to the surgery you got.  The RNY might not be the best surgery for him...the VSG or the DS might be much better...although then again it doesn't exclude the RNY Scott

I agree with what was said above.  Men tend to put off stuff like this.  My doctor has been after me for at least a year to do this.  Truthfully, what made me say yes, was seeing my wife plateau, but because of her eating habits.  I want to be there to support her.  It was wrong of me to bring the food I like into the house, even though she could not eat it.  And after all, I really do need the surgery.  I am 6'4" and weigh over 355 lbs.  The weight is ruining my knees.

I agree with DX E, and George T.  We men do wait too long to do something about  health issues.  I played football throughout highschool and college and worked out for years after that.  Losing or gaining weight was never a problem.  I later got into restaurant management which meant free food and no time to work out because of the long hours. In 2002, my doctor told me that my knee, hip and  back pain was from being overweight at 374 pounds and wls suggested surgery that my insurance would cover. I said, I guess I will lose some weight on my own.  5 years later, with no insurance, with limited mobility, and now at 540, I finally decided that I needed this surgery.  My knees sounded like popcorn popping when I would get up or sit down.  Please don't let him wait to long like I did. Please....and I mean PLEASE.... Have him drop by the mens forum here (we call it our Locker Room!) and have him click on some of our user names..... That will bring him to our own personal profiles and some of the guys here are so outspoken on how their lives have been totally -- and I mean totally -- changed by WLS....that he should read same and then do some due diligence to see if it's for him. Me? my life has so very much changed, that I'm in love with life, doing all the things I'd long since given up 20 years ago...and pretty pissed off at myself for ever ever allowing me to gain 200+ lbs..... WLS is a god send. It changes your life. It puts me back to being 25 again...and for a guy just 20 some odd months short'a being 60...thats' saying sumthin! We'll look for him and make him feel at home....the Locker Room is where he must come....if he wants to live again!!!! Jim

I would definitely point him toward this forum and let him browse around.  I was like him, I put it off for four years (which was stupid).  I now have a surgery date scheduled and I'm looking forward to my life without the extra weight.  The guys around here are very cool and very informative, so if he has any questions, he should post them here and he will get straight answers.  Good luck!
